Title: LOS Pilot via. FPV - Something I've always wanted to try!
Post by: DaveyLC on June 21, 2013, 06:36:10 PM
I've talk about doing this with my friend Charlie (who came to the meet) as he loves to try out crazy things.

The basic principal:

You follow a plane that is being flown LOS then the person flying LOS must watch your passenger screen/goggles and fly his plane using the FPV video feed as you follow it around!

Ok... i'm confused! I that like standing in front of 2 mirrors that are facing each other

I will do it (your plane though) ;-) with a stable plane it should be fairly easy (he says) its if the fpv'er looses the los plane then you could run into trouble. I might even have a donor plane to try this with one day if your game

That's a good point, we could use my plane.. just hit ACM or RTL if it goes a bit squiffy.

makes perfect sense to me. it's like being the passenger in a car, and driving another car by RC and the driver you're with follows where you drive the remote car. simples. sounds fun.

I think this would work - you'd probably have to agree beforehand that the pilot of the FRONT plane is the one who will do the corrections in flight to keep it on screen - otherwise you'd essentially both oscillate during corrections. one turns left, one turns right .. oh shit, other way.. aagh, no you stay still .. ahh RTH! lol

A sort of similar but incredibly stupid idea I had was full size RC cars.  Basically find a big, preferably slidey, car park, set up the camera somewhere overlooking, then sit in the car with the goggles on and try and drive around looking at yourself but from the outside.  What could possibly go wrong?

Well this weekend I managed to fulfil my dream

At the Mad Dogs meet I successfully flew my plane via Ratty's video feed for about 30 seconds but it felt like an eternity :D

This was hilarious to watch on the ground

Myself and CurryKitten did this the other day, and I flew for a couple of minutes plus a full landing all through CKs FPV footage.

Awesome video, well done with both video feeds and the voice recording on the ground really made it special.

And the tandem landing was awesome too, props to Krikey for following through and not bottling it and CurryKitten for chasing so well.

The skill was really CKs being able to follow me so well. As long as I could see my plane, I could fly it easily enough. The AXN is also a very forgiving one  to fly as you can pretty much fly hands off for brief periods.

Very kind - but that's far too much credit given to me.  A great combination of well matched planes, quite calm conditions (aside from the rain) and krikey is getting excellent at calling out his turns well in advance (except when he shouts thing like "I'm going to this" and then inverts and loops away).  I'm not as use to being lead plane, so I tend to call things a bit late, so krikey will say "where did you go" and I'll say "Ii turned left"... this is far from ideal :)

FlyBoySee mentioned at a recent Mad Dogs meet that we should try flying FPV from a three plane stack, so for example, the front pilot flys from the middle pilots footage and the middle pilot flys from the rear pilots footage. The rear pilot flys FPV from his/her own footage too.

We've successfully flown 5 planes FPV in a stack before and kept sync, so how hard can this be?

This adds a new dynamic to the equation that I'm not sure will work, but it might be fun trying.

That explains the mandatory lost model alarms then.
