Title: Best Zephyr ii build
Post by: vidal on July 25, 2013, 09:32:29 AM
Hello fellow Zephyr owners.

I've just got my new Zii.
Whats the best way to build it?

Wheres the best place to store gear?
Do I cut out opening at the side of the battery bay to store OSDs etc?

How do I cover the servos, vtx rx so the look clean and tidy?

How do I cover the spars so they cant be seen though the laminate?

How do I make it look a clean smooth white colour through the laminate? Will covering it in a thin coat of lightweight filler be enough?

Whats the best way to make the hatches?

What prop do I need? Ive to the recommend motor and esc.

Im wanting this build to look good and dont mind spending time building it.
Think im going to keep it white and just use the laminate covering to save on weight and just add a few bits of colour.

Ive ordered some some 3m 77 spray adhesive and some 3m packing tape. Also some gorilla glue for the spars. Anything else I need to order?

Hi bud, there're loads of how2 threads on the net & on here.

Here's one that helped me: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1525711 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1525711)

It very much depends what gear you have to put in it & where your centre of gravity is as where you put the gear.

Lightweight filler is good for filling holes & dents, depron should do for filling channels then fill on top.

Hatches with magnets on the rear & ca onto the wing on the front with a slit on the underside of the 1st layer of plastic to allow it to bend up to open.

Props, it depends what setup you use, 3s normally 10x6 (10x7??) or 4s 9x6 don't bother with folding props there's no need, just use a normal apc electric & set the esc brake on & the prop will ALWAYS stop inline with the wing & will never break.

OS motors are great & highly recommend them, also the ritewing esc & motor combo is amazingly good, it's light & very fast! A motor you need will be about 1200kv with a 70a esc.

Also if you're keeping it white don't use the 3m77 as after exposure to uv light it'll yellow, you don't really need to use it.

Plus, on my latest build I've put x2 extra spars into the wing, get some carbon tube the same as the main spar cut x2 lengths of about 25cm & insert them in the wing halves one inbetween the two bays & the other in the nose just in front of the battery bay - but be careful not to put it too far forward as you need to cut the nose off for cameras! Try to keep it under the recess for the battery hatch on the upper surface.
