Title: What antenna mount / pan tilt are you using ?
Post by: Randall on August 18, 2013, 11:37:57 AM
Just building my first tracker, and well I'm stuck on what pan tilt unit to use. I don't want to spend a fortune on the servo city one but I would like a tidy one. My duo is going to be mounted on the base and just the Fatshark Patch mounted on the pan and tilt unit. So what have you all used also what servos have you used ?

Any advise welcome

These are popular : http://www.readymaderc.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_27&products_id=96 (http://www.readymaderc.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_27&products_id=96)

A lot cheaper than the servo city version and takes larger antennas

Yea. Have seen that they are huge ! And being a tart I don't like the wood lol, I could easily paint it I guess but it seems a bit over kill for what I need tbh, however I have seen rattys and it does look well built and solid. I guess I could go this route if I can't find a smaller unit as I only want to mount the patch

That is the one I have used for the last two years with no problems, a bit jerky on the pan but I have lots of gear hanging off it. I use HS-645MG servos which are well man enough for the job.

Give us a clue then to what size your looking for, same size as Ratty`s doesn`t really help much :)

I meant ratty has the above, all i want to mount is the IRC patch nothing else.

Oh OK I see, if your not keen on wood then maybe someone can make a 3D printed one up for you that small ?

Now that is a genius idea :D

There appears to be very little competition for a product like that either (other than servo city).. Maybe a 3D Printer guru like Mr Collins could make something up? :)

I have just ordered this one from servo city:

http://www.servocity.com/html/spt200_pan___tilt_system.html (http://www.servocity.com/html/spt200_pan___tilt_system.html)

$46... (plus horrendous postage - don't ask.....)

I plan to use a GWS 125 1T 360 degree servo on the pan, and a standard metal gear on the tilt.

By the time you have spent £50 on the wooden one, you are nearly at the same cost as this one.......

I will post some photo's when it arrives next week.....

I also ordered the base mount section, and this:

http://www.servocity.com/html/1_4-20_round_screw_plate__5454.html (http://www.servocity.com/html/1_4-20_round_screw_plate__5454.html)

which means that the whole assembly can screw onto a standard tripod screw mount......

That`s the same as I first started with, its OK but only for small antennas really. My GWS kept burning out with bigger antennas on it

I've got one of those, it's very good apart from the tiny super flimsy base plate which when loaded with gear can make the pan wobbly & jerky. I modified mine with a motorcycle wheel bearing to sort out the pan section - amazing bit of kit now - silky smooth pan with large antenna carrying potential.
