Title: PHANTOM 2 - LIPO
Post by: jwmachon on December 31, 2013, 12:20:20 PM
Looking at the quad but i see the lipos are special and refuse to pay 107

Can these be modified to use a normal 3s 5000mah lipo

Thanks

Apparently your out of luck at the moment as the P2 battery has some fancy tech which is need by the P2 Naza to tell it that its a P2 battery so simply replacing the battery with Non DJI batteries just don't work.

My understanding is the custom Naza firmware on the P2 validates the chip in the P2 battery so will not start up if it doesn't see the correct checksum (to confirm your credit card details ;), so you cannot use anything but an original battery, there are a few DIY attempts to piggyback the original battery 'chip' so you can run std lipos.

You could replace the Naza with a std item but its an expensive solution, It may be possible to update/reflash firmware in the Naza to 'std' version and run normal lipos, but not aware anyone has done this yet, I'm sure someone will though.

Best to buy an original Phantom V1.1.1 you can run cheap lipos all day long, someone on rcgroups has swapped to the P2 body to give extra room for larger lipos, so you could do that later if flight time is an issue.

My view is if you want long flights, you probably need something bigger anyway.
