I fly an X-525 with RC-Timer 1000kV motors running 8 x 4.5 props.
I use the KK 2.0 FCC with V1.6 Firmware. She flys great and is very stable, however I cannot get it to hover and stay at an altitude. 1 click up throttle and it climbs, 1 click down and it sinks again so I am always on the throttle. I can get it to hover only if I trim it but as the battery voltage reduces then the trim setting becomes useless again
Would Exponential on the throttle help or is there something in the settings I am misunderstanding?
I use a Futaba T7C.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the "throttle/height" dampening setting but can't seem to get them right.

Although I fly a different setup to you I guess the same principles apply. I fly an F550 using a Spektrum DX8. I too found the throttle fairly sensitive, so I set up a throttle curve (I presume you can do the same on the T7C?) which has a very gentle slope around the mid-throttle position. This gives you a finer adjustment.

Yes you should have expo in around mid sticks to smooth it all out. If you can't get a perfect hover though because the trim is either side expo is not really going to change that

Throttle settings are more critical on rotorcraft. Heli specific txs as well as some txs which are multi model type have no ratchet. Due to the enduring power of Sods Law the throttle setting you want is always between clicks, as you have found out.
Without seeing a video it's hard to tell but assuming that the OP has flown multis before and thinks that the behaviour is abnormal e.g. the thing is bouncing up and down with tiny changes to the throttle then it could be a setup issue. If so then doing anything on the TX is not likely to properly resolve it. I had this with a KK2 quad and it only got fixed when I changed prop size.

I am one of the types that does like a throttle ratchet. Maybe that's because i've flown with one for so many years. I see the point though of removing it.
I am stuck in Wardak at the moment until Thursday then i'm off to Helmand on Friday for a few days so won't get to try it for a little while.
I'll try adjusting the expo in stages and see if it helps.
I am also bringing 10 x 4.5 props back from vacation with me so that may help as well.
