It seems that its been either raining or windy for as long as I can remember, with the very occasional glint of sunshine. The wind is too much for my Skywalker 168 or AXN. I've got a Fyingwings.co.uk VenturiFPV but haven't flown that in a while.
What airframe would people recommend for such blustery conditions? Would a wing be the most obvious choice, or perhaps a glider of some description? Is bigger better in these types of conditions?

Should be good for any wind speed to 30mph 45mph although once over 25mph you might not like it very much :D
I think you cant go wrong with a wing. For windy conditions it helps to have a bit more weight to prevent it from being blown around too much.
Gliders would work as well, though airframes that can take that amount of punishment wont come cheap.
TBH most planes will still fly in the wind, it's a question of you being more aware of how to fly in the wind.
That's not to say it's as enjoyable, but an AXN can easily handle mega wind - see this video from Bruce:

FPV will probably not be enjoyable - maybe it's "skills honing time" LoS ..?
Krikey, the only thing I can get to fly in stromg winds is one of my tricopters, they have 450mm arms 1200kv motors turning 8x4 props and laugh at high winds.In fact i don't even try to fly any of my other planes when its blowing a gale even my I.C heli is grounded.
Tried a 600 size quad in a gale it flew down wind but wouldn't come back LOL so I've scrapped it don't like them anyway Tony
any wing would do really, you could try building a teksumo as a slope soarer, so no motor just a nimh pack (or 2S Lipo and bec) for the RX and servos. Flying wings in high winds is very fun :)
Anorak flying is pretty good fun in a strong wind. Simply go to the top of your nearest hil wearing an anorak. Open the anorak.. Grab the two corners and hold your arms out and down. :)

model planes, heli's or multi's are not designed to fly in the sort of winds we've been having lately, they're always built as light as possible to give you longer flights on a normal day, if you really want to fly in this weather I'd recommend a kite, at least you stand a chance of getting it back in one piece! .
Andy66 : Haven't you heard the old saying "real men fly taildraggers", it's the only way to go mate.
Try a Bixler, we flew out 10 packs last weekend whilst everyone else who turned up watched on. I don't think it was really designed for those sort of conditions but the high speed down wind legs definitely put a grin on yer face:)
The winds were averaging 20 to 25 with gusts.

Last Sunday, gusting 30+, the plain never moved just kept gaining height. Full throttle to return from down wind.

Don't believe a" floater jet" can do 110mph never mind the charts etc', the best you can fly in these conditions is a wing or funjet typ of plane preferably a fairly heavy one, then you might fly in 110 mph winds because to stay overhead you have to fly at least 110mph!

the 110mph was the downwind speed.... an AXN can easily hit 60mph without any wind.

Yeah, slope soaring is the answer, something over 6' wing span with fibreglass fuz and veneered foam wings. Suitably ballasted you can fly in almost any wind. I fly a Pat Teakle ASW20, 15' wing span, tremendous fun even on moderate slopes in a blow. I prefer cliff flying over the sea where you get strong smooth air. ;D
I flew my Venturi with CurryKitten and Flyboysee over Brockenhurst and we had some wind averaging around 15-17mph and gusting into the 20s at times. I must say that its more exhilerating especially low and fast as you get eddys and whirls off the ground objects such as bushes and trees, this made approaches a bit hairy at times but no damage was done and we all had fun.
It doesn't always make great footage as you're being tossed about so much but its great to know that the Venturi can handle this.
