Title: General Maintenance Query
Post by: Witterings on February 18, 2014, 02:36:05 AM
Does anyone have any pointers for ongoing / pro-active maintenance for Motors, ESC's, Flight Controllers etc. i know if you spin a motor you can hear sometimes if the bearings are starting to grind and you can periodically check all wires / solder joints but apart from that what else is there anything else you can do?
I'm guessing it's not possible to tell if an ESC's about to fail on you mid flight or that your FC's going to have a brain fart mid flight, I don't know generally what else could be considered as good maintenance ???

Good question - after every session I check the tightness of all props, I listen to each motor & I also check antenna connections (both VTX & RX).

Unless its been swimming electronics are hard to check.

Props checks I do before each flight. At home afterwards I just check everything is nice and tight, no loose screws. Listen to motors, jobs a gooden :)

On my TBS, I check the red "posts" are secure .. after a  few flights they start to spin loose with the vibrations, I'm sure one day my frame is going to split apart in mid air

Threadlock? Phff!

And of it has been swimming whatever checks you were doing prior to it's dip obviously weren't enough  :D

Couple of thoughts:
- listen to motors
- do proper stress testing periodically with system tied down
- general visual inspection, corrosion on electronics, connectors, etc.
- lubricating motor shafts from time to time, especially after flying in rain (anyone does that anyway?)

But to be hones I'm not sure if you can do much. Either fly something small enough so it doesn't damage itself majorly when it falls or fly octo so you have at lest redundancy on ESC/motor side of things.

Any other ideas?

Range check radio, balance charge LiPo, check tx battery state by loading it if its NmH balance chage if it LiFe
