Title: Inside a covered 5.8Ghz antenna
Post by: weavo56 on March 10, 2014, 03:59:57 PM
I've had these 2 antenna 1 for goggles and other on my F550 they came with no Tx Rx labels so I've opened them up , they are the same inside ,see pic . Are they CL or skew  ?

Something else?

Why are the two nodes not joined?

Err lol

China did it again I see!

They are not either or! All the lobes should be joined and the lobes should be rounded not have flat sections to them I belive!

If they both look the same it makes no difference if they are TX or RX, I would be surprised if you got any range with these they just look odd!

You might get some range from the complete lobes but as soon as you turn to pickup the signal covered by the incomplete ones your video will vanish until you turn back.

I would strongly suggest not using those at all, they may in fact damage your video transmitter if they're made that badly.

They need to look like this:

Thanks guys , I think these covered  antenna hide a multitude of errors , will open up all my covered units to see what I've got . I could use the cable and plug and make some of my own as a test .

The soldering / build quality in those mass produced covered antenna can be really bad.   That flat copper they've used for the lobes looks naff too.

Could you say where you got them from?

It may not make the slightest bit of difference whether the antenna in the first post has has flat or rounded wire. Consider for example the different shapes of the elements on TV aerials - some flat, some circular, some solid, some hollow. I suspect it has something to do with ease of manufacture. There is info out there on electron flow at the different parts of a cross section though circular section wire (it's called skin effect) but nothing I can find about square or rectangular section. Sounds like the topic could be PhD material - investigation into electromagnetic radiation properties of different cross sectional elements.
BTW they are not called lobes, they are called elements. Antenna lobes are used to describe radiation patterns. Only being pedantic because elements is elements and lobes is lobes, whatever shape they are.
