Title: FY21AP II and AP117 - odd behaviour...
Post by: Devonian on April 10, 2011, 11:42:00 PM
I have the FY21AP II and new AP117 OSD, which exhibits some odd behaviuor.

Basically, I've had it several months now and originally had an issue with the 'old' original OSD severely reducing video brightness - this was resolved over time and FYtech supplied me with the updated 117 OSD, thanks to Simon for some assistance.
I should stress that I did not purchase through Simon (I got mine a couple of weeks before Simon started selling them).

So, I now have it all hooked up in my Skywalker with a Futaba T9 Super and Corona RPD81 on 35MHz.
Video is via an Immersion system.

As I see it, I may have 2 problems:
1) Switching the system to RTH does override any other setting - if I have ABM (Auto Balance Mode) and flip the Tx switch to RTH the FY21AP doesn't go to RTH.  The manual says RTH always overrides any other setting?

2) During flight and in RC mode (all modes de-activated) it randomly switches to ACM (Auto Circle Mode) and then back to RC and then to ACM.  This may happen several times in a minute and then not do it for another few minutes!
EDIT
Just watched some recorded video over and over and noticed when in ABM it switched to ACM back and forth a couple of times very quickly.
/EDIT

I haven't had enough flight time with the Skywalker to properly check all modes, so this random 'switching' may occur with other modes.
The failsafe/RTH works like a charm and was proven by powering off my RC Tx and watching the Skywalker beat a track home from 500 yards out.

Any ideas on the random 'mode switching' ?

Nigel.

It does sound like its glitching, very possible on 35mhz.

Yes, it could be glitching, but I don't appear to get it on any other control surface (at least, none that I can detect with low stick time on this model).
The Rx is a Corona RPD81, which is amongst the best for interference resistance and glitching.
Not to say I don't have a 'Friday afternoon' one, but my other RPD81's perform flawlessly.
For the price, I'll add another one to my next order from the big fish.

Still scratching my head over this one though...

I use the Coronas quite a lot and for the money they are hard to beat.
But with a stock aerial, I do see quite a bit of glitching on mine once get out maybe 150m.

I find that doubling or preferably quadrupling the length of the aerial stops that. i use those 2mm corally pulgs. Small / light and they pop apart if / when you step on it by accident!

I flew with Binnose13 on the weekend and he ha the same with his funjet. We added a 3m extension and bingo - no glitches. Plus miles better range.

I also had one BEC once that gave out bad RF that the Corona did not like...

Quick update:

My glitching Skywalker seems to be cured now.

Not sure exactly what cured the glitching as I made a few changes, including:

1) Putting back the positive lead on the ESC to Rx (mine is a 60A OPTO ESC (without BEC) as I read on a forum post somewhere to remove the positive lead to the RC Rx as it wasn't required - seems that's not so as the ESC needs 5v FROM the Rx to the ESC).
2) Moved the AP117 OSD as far away from the Rx as the cabling would allow.
3) Re-routed the 35MHz Rx aerial to along the leading edge of the wing.

Next time out I'll put the 35MHz aerial back on the underside of the fuselage and see if it glitches again, the rest stays as it is right now!

Check how many satellites its showing - need more than 5 or it switches mode1 - RC and Mode2 ABM autopilot is deactivated on its own...
