Title: Bixler 2 finishing the wings ?
Post by: weavo56 on March 24, 2014, 01:03:44 AM
I need to glue in the strip of foam which covers the servo cables and the carbon spar .
Whats the best way to do this ?

That glue that came in the box was pretty good - else it's foam to foam, so UHU Por will work nicely

I used gorilla glue, then once dry I sanded off any excess and then covered the length of the seam with fibre tape. This also adds a little bit of rigidity to the wing, you should notice it won't bend upwards as much.

Did you glue the CF rod into  one wing with the Gor glue  ?
If not  , did the glue  not go into the channel for the CF rod because it expands dosen't it ?

yes, I perma glued the spar into one wing.

then later on, after flying for a while, I permaglued the spar into the other wing as well as gluing the wing into the fuselage. being a 2 piece wing assembly will always be more flexible than a single piece.

OK  got the wings all glued up now , I have used the UHU Por glue and I have glued the CF rod into one wing .
I have covered the foam insert area with the fiber glass reinforced tape .

Just making an fpv mount to fit in place of the canopy  now .

Next job , im going to use the velcro strips method to keep the wings together .
Whats the strongest glue to stick the velcro to the foam ?

Not all sticky back Velcro is as sticky as other sticky back Velcro. The stickiest stick back Velcro I've found is the stuff from hobby king, but guessing you want something a bit quicker, if what you find isn't as sticky as you want, I've found the impact adhesive is very very good at sticking not-so sticky sticky back Velcro to surfaces, especially lipo packs.

search ebay for adhesive velcro tape. the first item that came up when I did that search last night is the one I used. It was very sticky to the foam and never came off in the entire life of the aircraft.

remember, the velcro will not be constantly trying to unstick from the foam, the direction of the force applied is laterally... try removing any sticker "sideways" compared to peeling it up away from the surface.

dont use just a small tab of velcro tape, use at least a 15cm strip on the underside of each wing. you will need a strip of non adhesive velcro to pass through the fuselage and press against the velcro stuck to the wing on each side.

Hi Chris , yes must admit some of the heavy duty sticky velcro is strong stuff bought some 50mm wide stuff for making pads from and that works great . I understand the force is along the wing and its harder to pull apart that way , I will use one  piece going through the body to hold both wings together .
Cheers mate

I have never used any other method than just plugging in my wings to hold them on with my ez they never have worked loose other than from a bad landing but even then only a inch if that :)

I hold mine on by winding a small bit of tape onto the spar a couple of inch,s back from the ends and if they lossen a bit i put a tiny bit more on the foam grips it fine it dont need much to hold firmly

just my two penny's worth saves the hassle of velcro etc on the wings ( my ez as done over 300 flights now same wings same fusladge) ok shes tatty but the wings still fit snuggly together but the tape bumps are bigger lol ;D

dizzy :)
