Title: Twinstar II Vtx mounting question
Post by: Ren on March 25, 2014, 10:45:00 AM
Right then, need a little advice from you lot please.

Just bought a new Twinstar II and starting to layout the FPV gear before glueing the sides of the fuselage together (should I glue them together ?)

I'm thinking of mounting the ImmersionRC 600mW Vtx right in the tail section with the antenna sticking out the bottom of the fuselage like the pic. Will this have an adverse effect of transmission being upside-down ? or will the radiation pattern of the circular skew cause issues ?

Put mine on the top of fuselage just behind the wing. In the airflow for cooling. Been there about 6 years now :)

You should also consider heat dissipation as you are effectively proposing trapping the VTX inside an insulated box. I have a 100mW VTX which runs very hot and therefore needs to be located externally. I have the camera and VTX mounted on the cut down canopy so that the camera gets an unobstructed view forward and the VTX is in the airflow. I haven't got a pic of my latest config. but here's an old pic of my first setup.
Some of the other guys here can advise on whether the ImmersionRC 600mW VTX runs hot or not.

On 12V they run pretty hot after a while, I wouldn't expect one to last very long without airflow or at least a heatsink mod...

Thanks guys, I was thinking the same re heat. It does run pretty hot after a while.
Up front sounds like and option then. I'll have a play with the other gear to see where I can get best separation etc. from Vtx and OSD / Rx etc.

I guess I need to fabricate some sort of pan/tilt arrangement for the GoPro as well now !
Thanks

I think it would be fine there if you just cut a hole to expose the heatsink.  Better to get some physical distance between the VTx and any substantial objects, such as batteries, which can block the signal.  I have mine in the top of the fus behind the wing just stood vertically in a hole I cut with the antenna sticking out.  It comes down warm but not hot.

I've had some success cooling an ESC internally by using a plastic spoon (with the handle cut off) as an air scoop to channel air inside. Cut an exit vent as well and it works well - maybe worth investigating?

Hi Mark, where did you get the plywood canopy cover thing / pan/tilt thingy from ?

here's another option for you:

I place the VTX out on the wing, trace around it with a marker, then cut out that shape from the wing. Then I remove the cut out and slice it in half laterally (this all actually depends on the dimensions of the VTX). I place the bottom half back in the wing, glue it in place with UHU POR and secure underneath with fibre tape (all my wings have fibre tap underneath anyway, so it doesn't make an eyesore anyway). I then place the VTX in the new neatly cut "hole" with the heatsink poking out the top.

the heatsink is in the airflow, and the VTX antenna is out on the wing, miles away from any other interference it may encounter.

heres mine, built to be streamlined,no wires hanging and just a buried fpv cam in nose.
pan and tilt works fine but does create a lot of drag, also vtx prolly best in the wing and uhf rx back out on tail for maximum separation from rest electrics..
mine did an easy 15k out and back using only about 4400mah 3 cell.
also make sure you don't bury stuff too deep in the fusalage so removing is major surgery to remove or replace,
