It works quite well actually, although its hard to get a consistent speed whilst staying smooth. Needs some practice but chuffed for less than £10 in parts!
Looks nice mate, why don't you put a motor and a belt on it and then you can get some smooth movement?

Cheers Badlands! It's loosely based on some existing designs, but there really isn't much to it to be honest. Just some PVC pipe attached to a bit of fibreglass sliding along some copper poles, with wooden blocks each end!

If you attached a rubber band to the center of your blue base you could pull your camera rig along similarly to what the guy in the video is doing with his tripod.

Good results. You could use a length of threaded bar with a motor and few bits to make a nice smooth drive mechanism which might be easier to source than a belt drive.
I think this project deserves a few more pic's of the dolly at least.

Yeah thats a good point, I should have done some more pictures at the start but I got a bit carried away just using it! I'll maybe add a follow up to show how its put together, although it really is simple!
The elastic band is a good shout, will give that a try! I was watching it back there and it looks less smooth on youtube than the original, youtubes processing must screw it up a bit.
YouTube is just generally pretty horrible. It seems a total crapshoot as well, some scenes it deals with ok and then others it seems to skip frames or show horrible compression artefacts. Use Vimeo for anything you've put any effort into.

I think you're alot better off with some sort of motor drive though. I tried the rubber band but even that can be jerky.
Someone tried a servo motor run off 5 volts, running a pully with fishing line. I'll see if I can find the link.
