Title: Naza mv2 setup problems
Post by: peter.3dmodels on April 29, 2014, 03:21:08 PM
I have just putting together my second quad. I am using a naza mv2 initial setup is ok except that when I go to motor test page none of the motors will start but will work if I set it to high motor idle speed. The radio is a taranis set to normal aero. The biggest headache is that I cannot start the motors what I think should be normal setup, I move the sticks to the corners as stated but nothing happens until I neutralise the sticks and just move the throttle to midpoint and all the motors start up and if I go beyond half stick the motors accelerate  as normal for take off. The throttle trim has to be all the way back also for it to work.
I am using a 8xr rx with Afro 3oamp esc which I have  calibrated individually (powering up at full throttle then lowering the stick to hear beeps)
Any help would be appreciated
Peter

You need to calibrate ESC's 1000-2000ms for Naza IIRC, your full stick range on taranis will be more than that - probably something like 800-2200, easy to do with a servo tester with pulse width display, or by tweaking taranis end points to reduce range down.

Thanks I will give that a go.

I decided to make a fresh start on the taranis Tx. Deleted all my previous programming, did not go for the template menu decided to input the channels separately.  Then work on the calibration of the ESC's. Did all the programming and tx setup.
So ok lets try the motor test, did not work on recommended settings, so increased the settings to high, motor test works fine. :D  Next test, I will come out of the program do a proper start, It worked, I could not believe it.  :D  The engines ticked over at low throttle took it to half stick still accelerated and a click past and the motors went to take off RPM, Brilliant.
Sorted out the GPS Att Manual switch also the failsafe function switch. Got the failsafe to kick-in when Tx is off just below half stick. Just need to sort out the IOC function and nearly done.

One thing I learned don't go for basic aero in Taranis templates they must be something in the program Naza does not like. I can get the quad going now and test fly the new Taranis setup then later this year swap it into a Hex.   :D

Newbie, started multirotor last Xmas with Naza lite.

The Naza is just looking at the channel inputs, nothing clever so taranis model settings should't make any difference, you could fly it with a RTF transmitter with no modes/mixes whatsoever if calibrated in assistant correctly, if you go into assistant and watch the sliders they should show if anything odd is happening - as long as each channel goes full range and centres correctly thats all the naza should need.

IIRC the default idle speed outputs pulse about 1100ms from naza when armed, and 940ms I think on initialisation, so if you calibrate ESC 1000-2000 it should start at that point, so sounds like the calibration is slightly out.

As long as everything works correctly (including motor stop/shutdown), it probably doesn't matter if your ESC's are calibrated a bit off as long as they are all the same, and you can start/stop motors as expected.

A cheap servo tester with pulse width display is a good investment, for a fiver plus a 5 way adaptor from hobbyking you can calibrate and test ESC's all together very quickly and easily.

What I will do is next time I place a order with HK I will get a servo tester. Just a quick question wii the tarnis servo page 7 give me the same figures at the moment the low throttle is set at 988us and full throttle reads 1855us midpoint 1408us. I am not a electronics expert do these numbers have the same relationship.

Yes, you just need to adjust endpoints so low throttle is 1000us, high throttle is 2000us (mid should be 1500 but isn't too critical) and then do ESC calibration as you did before.

Sorry if I've confused you with units - us is microseconds, I use ms out of laziness.

You could calibrate the naza to the tx with same throttle range (using tx calibration in the assistant software), or change it back to defaults, the naza input range will adjust to your radio when you do the tx calibration, but you cannot alter the Naza output range to the ESC's (its fixed 1000-2000) which is why you have to calibrate ESCs to 1000-2000.

It sounds a lot more complicated than it is, all that matters is ESC's are calibrated 1000-2000 and you calibrate the Naza to your transmitter, and test everything works as expected.

A good explanation of pulse widths (which is how all our radio gear works from receiver to servo/ESC/flight controller) is

Thanks for the info I will do that setup and calibration before I fly. Won't be flying this weekend but get it ready for the week after so plenty of time.
