Title: does anyone think ailerons on the easystar is worth it
Post by: MCPF1 on May 01, 2011, 12:02:11 PM
i was thinking of putting ailerons on or making a bigger rudder because the plane takes for ever to turn without throttle.

Oh yes, it totally transforms the easystar into something a bit more fun to fly. It also enables you to perform co-ordinated truns too which makes for better footage. You can then also have the flexibility to add gyros to the ailerons for super smooth flight

Well, I have the WildHawk which is an EZ* rip off, and I've literally just ordered the servos and splitter cable to do it with the stock radio (disconnecting the rudder and putting the splitter in its place).

So yea - I'm hoping it lets me fly in higher winds with the better response.

Having said that, have you done the rudder modification to your EZ* by adding some extra foam? Made a hell of a difference to me.

This guy made a good video showing a lot of detail

Multiplex EasyStar modified for aerial video and photography (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Rg6pnAq960#)

As I have said else where.
If man had meant to fly he would have wings.
If Multiplex had meant the EZ* to have ailerons they would have designed it for them.
Loads of pros and cons on this subject.
All I have done on my 2 EZ*s is to enlarge the rudders. That gives me all the extra responce I need.
Also in my opinion... Gyros are for girls. :-*

In my opinion it's all down to personal preference. If you are using it as a first trainer then I certainly would put ailerons on it but keep them low initially. I learnt on a 3 channel rudder only and the jump to 4 channels, i.e. with ailerons was almost like relearning how to turn.
Rudder only obviously uses the secondary effect of yaw which is roll to turn the model. Whereas the primary effect of aileron is roll so the turn starts immediately and as stated in another reply the turns can be coordinated a lot better.
I fly an easy as my first FPV ship but certainly not my first model, that was 40+ years ago. I made a slight Faux Pas by putting the ailerons to far in board of the wings but mixed with the standard sized rudder makes a very controllable flyer.
Just my opinion of course.

My Easystar has the larger rudder + ailerons, much better plane to fly IMHO.
I only use the rudder for slow turns and corrections when landing.

If you use rudder/elevator only, try putting the rudder on the same stick as the elevator - gets you ready for ailerons ;)

I find the Easystar always wants to dive on hand launch with any amount of throttle on, so a trick is, if you have a programable Tx, is to put a few degrees of up elevator on a switch.  Flick the switch for a bit of up ele for takeoff/one handed launch and once it's away and your hand is back on the Tx, flick the switch for normal ele.

With reference to the diveing with a hand launch. I find it depends on the wind speed.
With no or little wind it will dive untill it picks up enough speed and then it climbs away.
When there is more wind, I find that it climbs away with out the dive.
I normaly have to give down elevator to stop it climbing at too steep an angle.
When at a 'safe' height I then reduce throttle on the 1400kv motor, 6X4APC prop, 20amp ESC.
