Title: Need an RX antenna which will work with all my TXs.
Post by: jweaver on August 05, 2014, 01:45:53 PM
I am never going to be doing any long range stuff.. I am more than happy sticking to local flying so don't need anything special on the antenna front.

I currently have 3 TXs and 3 different "skew" antenna pairs permanently attached.. 1 is Left Handed.. 1 right.. And 1 is currently an unknown.

When I fly with my Goggles, I simply use the 'mate' of the one which is on the TX and its fine.

But I have just ordered a Uno 5800 so that I can also run a screen (without using the goggles) and need another antenna for the times when I want to run the screen and goggles at the same time.

Since I have 2 of one polartiy (lets assume LH) then I am OK for LH TXs. But when I am running the RH one, I only have one RX antenna.. So I could just buy another RH antenna, but its all a bit confusing.. So I just wonder whether if there is an antenna I could source for the Uno which would work with the LH or RH circular antennas? Even if its not entirely efficient?

Is there anything I can use for this? Or should I just buy another cloverleaf so that I have the entire set (So I would have 2 LH and 2 RH)? What about the standard Rubber Ducky aerial? Will that pick up a circular polarized signal?

You can buy additional RH antenna and it will work with your other RHCP gear no problem.

The only way to have one antenna for both is by using a linear antenna, this will pick up both LHCP and RHCP transmissions. The pay off is you will loose all multipath interference rejection and 3dBi of gain

Cheers.. Buying another RH antenna is certainly the best route.. As i will have a pair of Left and Pair of right.. But its all getting a bit messy and would prefer to have one on the Uno which did all...

Believe it or not, a good friend of mine designs antenna for the MOD, and I have been planning to sit down with him one weekend and do some tests of the antenna/Transmitters that I have on their test bed to see how they perform.. And was hoping that he might be able to 'design' something for me.. But we never seem to find the time.

I'd just go for a skew and either a 5 or 3 turn helical on your uno mate, rhcp is prob 90 % of what I sell
Let me know if your interested

Cheers.. I might just do that.. I can't remember which is which.. But I have the Immersion Spironet antenna which is on way (Left I thought, but it could be right). Then I have some cheap eBay skew/cloverleafs which are the opposite to the Spironet.

And finally, I have just bought another cheap pair from eBay which are 'cased' and I have never opened them to find out.. So I either have 2 x LH or 2 x RH and at some point need to test to find out.

So even if I bought a Helix.. I would still need 2.. Why is nothing ever simple.

Of course it would simply make sense if I just had a good set and moved them around from model to model as I needed them. And this would be easy as all 3 of my TXs now have SMA extension leads running to a different part of the chassis. But I like leaving them on, so that there is no risk of powering up with no antenna connected.. It seems a shame to have installed the extension leads to mechanically protect the connector on the board, to then blow it up by not having an antenna connected!

I always pull the power plug from the vtx for such reasons as you said
