Title: Go Discover, fuselage-less
Post by: BlueFlyer on December 07, 2014, 02:29:41 PM
With all the FPV equipment now transferred over to my Bix3, I was looking at my Go Discover and thinking how unnecessary the big dome was, now that I'm only using it for LOS and have ZERO intention of ever FPVing it again.

The power setup inside is fairly substantial, would definitely suit a skywalker or other large wing... so I decided to take it out. But, I wasn't going to just rip open the foam in the workshop.. no no no...

I took the Go Discover flying one last time, with the actual intention of crashing it full speed into the deck.... you know, just for some fun :)

lo and behold, the crash destroyed the centre section of the fuselage, but both wings were completely unscathed.

This gave me an idea...

will line bottom of that bay with ply and glue in place a velcro LiPo strap. The wingspan is now only 1280mm and without FPV gear or large LiPos to carry, I'll be using a less powerful power setup too. I've got a 2826 1400kv motor and 30A ESC on the way, all will be powered using a 2200mah 3S, of which I have plenty lol.

I was wondering whether to put the fins out on the wingtips, or have bunny style fins... went for bunny style.

It's all just experimental fun of course, nothing serious. and not for FPV, although I might put a strip of velcro on there to put the mobius on a few flights.

Looks like it will do the job Chris :)

Looks good, I've been having a blast with my hacked up Falcon, hopefully you'll have the same luck with this!

cheers, I've got one of these motor mounts on the way from Hobbyking:

should do the trick

(I actually have 3 of those motor mounts on the way... the other 2 are for a twin motor setup project for my Bix3 spare wings)

WOW!!!

I am so happy today... this worked perfectly... and I mean, perfectly.

I didn't "calculate" where CG should be, I just chucked the gear on the wing where it just happened to fit (with regards to wire lengths etc) and just hoped for the best.

It flew really well, and once I had toned down the rates and trimmed it out, it was an absolute dream to fly. I honestly havent flown a better wing.

Looks better than the original.
So just buy a pair of spare wings from HK. and you've got the basis for a decent wing?

deffo Jake, I'm not even kidding.

I might do just that and make one for FPV

ah, in fact... I've got the bunny ears too, they come with the fuselage I think

you've got a recipe for a great wing.

Awesome, glad it worked out for you! I've had similar luck with my experiments in terms of CoG etc, its pretty satisfying when you can get the performance you wanted from old bits and bobs!

Look forward to the FPV version! :D

well I've been flying this a lot lately, mostly due to the fact that it's too windy to fly anything else lol

It's been flying so well, that tonight I decided to finally put a camera and VTX on it. There's no OSD so hopefully it will make for some close in, pure simple FPV flying.

cheers Billy, I'm now considering buying a new set of wings and a carbon spar as they're in stock right now in UK warehouse.......

How does it compare to the GD?

A friend of mine has a GD and found landing really difficult. High stall speed and 75% of the time on landing it would bounce and flip around. He didn't fly it heavy either 1x 3000 4s.

When in the air it was great, however.

This is super light, flys brilliantly. Flys slow enough for me to catch it too.

Put some red tape over that weave stuff, it'll look even better.

oops, this is the end of this one (no Steve W I won't just tape it together lol) but my next wing will definitely be made with the Go Discover wings.

Oooo ... looked like you lost signal and hadn't set failsafe to have neutral surfaces??

On another note that's a lovely place to fly. If you had a plane :D

thats right... for some reason the failsafe on this rx is set to snap roll right lol.... oops

no idea what caused it, not too fussed though as I managed to get it back if only for the electronics.

the built in dominator v2 DVR was a god send, i was able to instantly watch back the flight up until the moment I lost video and figured out roughly where it went down. went for a little wander and found it

only thing broken (apart from the airframe that is) is the SMA connector from the VTX PCB

it is Steve, one of the best places I've flown FPV. And I do have a plane lol, I've got a Bix3 here and another build in progress ;)

Bad luck. Looked like fun though!

Are there any mods or changes you will make to the mark II?

Yeah, I'm thinking about a centre section of some sort. for 2 reasons...

1. for easier motor mounting... these wings have a lot of reflex built into their cross section, and it's more pronounced at the back where the wings meet and where you'd have the motor. This means it's a pain in the backside to make a flat motor mount with the right thrust angle (I think I just got lucky with this one). I had to cut out almost half of the wing chord just to get a flat area.

2. to make mounting the FPV gear and batteries a bit easier.

I will probably make bunny ears out of depron next time insted of using the fins from the Go Discover. They were a bit fat lol.

Laminate the next one and it will survive the impact :D

perhaps lol

doesn't matter anyway, as the UK warehouse are out of stock for these wings.... so I bought a Z84 Wing Wing instead.

much smaller, but a FPV cam and IRC600 vtx won't stress it too much. no point putting a mobius on it.

There's always a point to putting an HD camera on it :)  I fly my wing wing through an 808 camera.  It's just my short range slow flying little plane, so it works well for this

Oh yeah, I forgot about live out from the mobius, but that way I have to provide power to it also. Which means a SBEC, just more stuff to fit in... I've had a wing wing and I know how tight they are for space.

I'll be happy with a simple fpv cam and vtx until I get a slightly bigger wing.
