Title: Futuba transmitter / receiver issues.
Post by: Heatlump on July 19, 2011, 11:31:32 AM
Hi All,

I have been trying to install a newly purchased Futuba 6exp transmitter and R136F receiver but cant seem to get anything useful out of the receiver. All channels seem to randomly wind up and down / jitter etc. If I use my old stock Dynam transmitter with the futuba receiver everything seems to be fine, and if I use my old Dynam receiver with the new Futuba transmitter, its still very glitchy, but at least it seems to do mostly what I tell it to do. It seems to be that the combination of the Futuba transmitter and receiver is unusable and the Futuba instructions seem to be quite unhelpful when it comes to troubleshooting / setting up transmitters / receivers processes!
Once again, please excuse my ignorance, but is there some tuning sequence I should be running for binding new transmitters / receivers? Does it matter that I am using my original Dynam crystals even though they are standard FM etc (the Futuba system didn't come with a crystal set)? Have I been sent a duff transmitter?

Yes its your crystals, you need matching brands, futaba crystals in a futaba tx and the same in rx

There is no user tuning to be done or binding with crystal controlled equipment. Tuning should only be done by competent and approved personnel and binding only applies to this new fangled 2.4GHz gear. Also there is no such thing as a standard FM crystal. Granted there is some crystal compatibility between certain brands, but it is bad practice to mix and match. The reason is that the actual crystal frequency is not necessarily the frequency that the transmitter transmits or the receiver receives. This is due to the design of the circuitry in both items. Different manufacturers have different ideas on what to use as a reference frequency, which is what the crystal really is.

Also your statement that "its still very glitchy, but at least it seems to do mostly what I tell it to do" is a recipe for disaster if you go flying. If you have any glitching at all on the ground and with the tx and rx close to each other, it will only be worse in the air.

As Coyote correctly points out Futaba crystals for Futaba gear.

Hey Heatlump

Listen to the gents here and invest in some new crystals. I have the 6ex and use the same rx as you and I can tell you that I am very happy with that setup - for a 6 channel tx and rx. Spend the money, insert the crystals and that is all of your tx/rx troubles over ...

Hi,

Thanks for all your help – have ordered a set of kosher Futuba crystals so hopefully problem solved! Glad to hear someone else has the same equipment and that it behaves well!

Check the Tx is not in PCM when it should be in PPM or vice versa.

... have tried both PPM and PCM modes on the Tx tho I'm pretty sure the Rx is PPM. Which mode is better for fpv?

Hey Heatlump

There's nowt wrong with that setup, before I bought mine I did some research and generally people were happy with it if they needed a 6 CH. I also saw some cool fpv ships using it in YouTube videos, check it out.

Also I don't know if you have found out about it though, but on this forum there is a link or links on how you can double your range by doubling your rx wire. I think it's 101 cm but read up on it before listening to my newbie advice  ;D
