FPV HUB

Hi Guys
I love my Fox, its my lightweight travel buddy, but I want something slightly bigger, and capable of a heaver pay lode, but still suitable for park flying,
i'm hoping this will be the Ford Fiesta of the FPV world, I'm fiting it with the Newest V1.5 Easy Osd. http://fpvhobby.com/130-v14-easy-osd.html (http://fpvhobby.com/130-v14-easy-osd.html)

Cool you got one then  :D, I have mine ready to build, servos, motor, esc, props etc. I'm going to start it this week now that I have finished my quads. Mines getting hobby king osd and im flying it on 35mhz once it goes fpv but 2.4 initially

Hi all.
I have been tinkering with my Mini Skywalker, what a lovely little plane, I think that the quality of this little kit is great and if it flies as well as the build went I will be one happy bunny.

I started with the power plant, I went for Hyperion 2100 kv rpm/v HP-Z1709-06 motor, running a 5X3 prop,  and a Robot bird 20A ESC.
I have pushed all the wires throw the wing, so I can connect to the plane

the next thing was the ailerons, I have used 4.5g, Blue Bird BMS-303 Ultra Micro Servos.
I have put an extra bend in the control wires, for any adjustment needed, I have used 2 servos, so I can mix with flaperons, I expect this model to be on the heavy side, this should help slow it down a tad.

the next step was to start looking at the placing of the electronics, I have fitted the Newest V1.5 Easy Osd. from FPV hobby's.
I have also fitted a Rangvideo 12 to 3v board, to power the mini 5.8 VTX.
I'm using a Futaba 2.4ghz FASST, RX.

this shows that the placing of the RC RX has room for the connecting wires.

and here is the connections under the wing. I'm using small extensions, the rx is a little hard to get to.

I have mounted the GPS behind the prop, on a little flat platform, and ran the servo wire in a groove that runs down the side if the plane.

this is the `4.8ghz VTX, I have made a clover antenna and fixed it directly, the sticking out pins are the channel changing pins, it gives me 4 different channels.

I have not glued the fuselage together, I have taped it with Blenderm tape, and reinforced tape on the bottom landing surface.
I'm still waiting for the camera to arrive, so I haven't fitted that yet.

well thats it so far, its raining at the moment so I cant test it, but It all works well on the bench, and runs at full throttle and pulls just over 7A.

Hi that was quick, the rain went and the sun came out to play.
I stuck 2 AA batteries on the front, to represent the camera wight, found a small group of kids in the park to film for me, and away she went, she flies beautifully, I'm well happy, cant what to get the FPV gear on.

thanks Guys, I'm rely Exited about this one, it was such a pleasure to build and It flu so well strat out.
I have red some good things about the futaba FASST systems range, I have a Sony wdr 600, its a bit heavy with a metal case but its the same weight as the dummy wights in the test flight, when I sat it on the nose of this plan it balances perfectly, I was going to stick an open case camera on it, but, its not arrived yet, Ill stick the wdr 600 on for now.
and hope for good weather tomorrow.

Well I love this little bird, I managed to get a flight in today, I went to my local park its a familiar place, I will venture to the heath tonight if the weather improves, it was only a quick one, it started spiting, so I boult it down and packed up sharpish, there's enuf to show you the results tho :)

It wouldn't holed as much as the Easy Star, its wing span is only 840mm, but as you can see in my posed, it holds all you need for a small FPV, I'm uploading tonight's flights on the Black heath, I'm really impressed with it, and ther was a guts of wined blowing.

You do have a knack of getting these small birds up and running.

I bought two of these kits from Low price Rc last month $40 each but it came with 4 servos which had gears made from egg shells.
Anyway built it with one of those sugar cube cam's up front. No OSD.
Flew well till I lost video feed and my spotter was looking the other way. CRUNCH!!!

But repaired.

Have been having issues trying to get a decent Vtx signal using 2.4g but no joy yet.

Must admit to being too busy with Quads and getting my Easy Glider in the air and FPV'd up.

Will try soon to patch it up.

I did fit permanat flaps to it though.
1/16 ply trailling edges fitted inboard of the ailerons. Just stuck to the top of the wing to carry on the natural  curve.

Seems towork well at slowing it down. Yours must be quite fast.

to be honest I don't use the flaps anymore, I fined it lands great without them, ass you can see from my posted videos.
I love this plan, I'm considering adding the ruder, I didn't bother at first to save some weight, but I was in some strong wind lased weekend and had to lean in to the wind to keep it going where I wanted, Ive ordered a spear plane from Hobby king for $25 ish, if I do set it up, I might go with 35mhz, Leave the OSD and GPS and go for a pan and tilt camera setup and a couple of gyros for stable flight, a mini observation platform.

What kind of range are you getting with the antenna you have on there?

I haven't been no further than 1500ft so far, I need to go somewhere safer, I don't wont to loos the signal and end up blind.

That seems like pretty good range for me  :D

I have now ordered the skywalker with all the RC bits but now just need the FPV bits. I'm just gonna have a hobbyking simple OSD.

Does the video Tx get hot? I believe its the same module that the hobbyking one uses and that gets warm with a heatsink on so...?

It does get hot, you can run it with a voltage regulator.

you wont be disappointed, its a great little plane, I have quite a big camera on my one, trying to get a camera that is good light and under £25 is a big ask, unless you fined one second hand, but check out  www.securitycamera2000.com (http://www.securitycamera2000.com) and have a look, I had a quick scout for you and found this for £32.13

This is the Skywalker with the camera on, as you can see its pretty big compared to the size of the plane, but its has a good picter.
it also shows the LED warning light in front of the camera, I have panted all around the LED to stop the glare of the sun, leaving just the tip showing, this is connected to the RX LED to worn me when I'm getting to the maximum rang of the RX.

I am trying to source the 200mw video transmitter from china because the one from range video is the wrong channels I believe.

Should be getting the FPV gear for it soon, It seems to have plenty of power on a 1300mah 3s lipo though not sure about the CofG, Did anyone else find that it doesnt bank into the turns properly? I'm going to try mixing in some rudder with the ailerons to see if that helps.

im only using a 900ma battery with my one, Im afraid I have limited Internet at the moment, so I cant watch yore video, I should be up and running by the end of next week.

I'm still waiting for some parts for mine, but I want to build it light using a 400 to 800mah 2S battery, however I'm afraid it may turn out tail heavy that way and in that case I may build it as a twin engined puller. Is anybody using such small batteries in it?

your most welcome mate.
you have don a lovely clean build so far, what I do when extending the wires is stagger the joins, so the positive is slightly longer than the negative, which is slightly longer than the signal wire, it keeps them apart and when you put shrink rap around the join, its thinner, stronger and you don't need 3 separate bits of shrink rap.
if you ever need to discus any ideas, just give me a call.
I have nearly finished the mark 2, I'm trying to cram an FY21 and a AP117 in this one, its a tight fit, but if I manage it, it will have autopilot and return to home.

Just when you thought it couldn't be don, I did it.  :laugh:
this is the maiden flight of the mini Skywalker 2.
i'm afraid I was in a bit of a rush and didn't give much thought to the ground antenna, it was on its side and pointing to the plane, so it was fliying in its lol, but it was all line of sight, so I didn't realise, now I now its all good, I will probably put a better camera on it, its only a £12 one.
the FY21 and the AP117 was a bit of a squeeze, but still easier to fit to this, than in my Easy star setup.
as you can see in the picks, I removed the case of the FY21, this allows it to be suspended on the foam mounts, without touching anything.
I was rely surprised that it didn't need any trimming, and when I switched it to auto level, it flow strait and level.
I tried to run the setup with one battery, but could not get it without interference to the video, I guess its all to tightly packed, so in the end I used separate batteries, a 360mah for video and 900mah for motor.
I now the screen is cluttered, but I left it on full OSD, just so I could see it all working.

I am just wondering one thing: what kind of flying weight are you achieving?  Looking at your latest iteration with the FY unit and board camera ... seems this plane can handle quite a bit.

I started into my MiniS build this week.  I put on CE OSD1.5, a 1000mah 3S battery, a 3 gram camera and an Orange Rx+satellite.  The video is a Foxtech 200mW unit with a TrueRC pinwheel antenna.  I am at 450grams before I finish the build with servos and such!  Seems real heavy for a plane advertised at 250 grams.  I think the power is there on my build to fly it, but is it going to be a flying brick at 450gm+, and be pushing the wing spar to the limit?  I realize I can save 50 grams on the battery if I go for a smaller one.  Whaddya think?

the all up flying wight for the one with the CE OSD 1.5 is 407g up and fliying, when I place the HK wing cam on it takes the weight up to 437g and flies great, it is a lot heavier than the suggested weight, but still cruses at half throttle, the one with the FY kit in it, is the same weight ish, but I use a separate 30g lipo for the FPV gear.
I love my mini Skywalker and prefer to fly it, rather than my EasyStare.

well finally maidened today - a total success.  So much that now I also prefer flying it to my Easystar (Bixler FPV DOSD).  But my CE OSD was a dud.  Then I bought Nova OSD, which was also a dud.  Picked up EagleTree w stabilization - it works great.  But once I have a 1300 battery, it is well over 450 grams.  And yet it flies great, like a much larger plane even though I have not yet set up the stabilization.

Got the Mini Skywalker mark 2 flying again today, after waiting for a replacement AP117, I'm glad to report it all seems to be good and flying well. I couldn't go no higher than about 15m, before I was in the mist, but the auto level and RTH seemed to be working fine, so roll on for the next bit of fine whether to see what she can do.

Wa who, today I took it out to 400m odd and the picture signal was crystal clear with just the Fat Shark built in 2.4Ghz receiver, I switched on the RTL and she gently banked round and came back home, then circled round me at about 100m until I switched it back to RC, its a great little plane, cant what to take it to somewhere more interesting.

i'll modeling it on chalk shape by means of my hot air solder.

or build an aerodynamic enclosure.

On my 2nd mini Skywalker, I have a big 2.4Ghz clover sticking up at the front of my wings, on top of the canopy, and it doesn't seem to effect the flight. it will probably be a bit  of a squeeze to fit it in side and personally I wouldn't worry about making some sort of cover for it.
the plastic nose sounds interesting, don't forget to post up some pictures when its ready.

I took the Mini Skywalker out tonight in a bit of wind to test out the AP117 and the FY21 stabilizer and considering how windy the gusts wear it handled it pretty good, I took it out to over 600m without a flicker, its a great little plane, bit of a boring location local to me, and the sun was almost gone so its a bit dark and grainy, so I haven't posted to much, just a quick demo, please tern down you volume, I forgot to take out the sound.

I now this isn't as far as some of you guys are getting, but its just perfect for this little bird, with just the antenna on my Fat sharks.

Nice one Simon, but I would put some hot glow or something around the base of that cover were it connects to the VTX for a brace, it will snap of, looking good tho, good luck with the maiden.

Would someone mind sharing details/images of how they're holding the horizontal stabilizer on without glue? So it can be packed up easily for transport...

I've seen a photo by someone on RCGroups that shows some sort of nylon screw...

I am building a Mini-Skywalker too, but was planning to NOT use the rudder. Does your MS with the FY21AP indeed use the rudder? Or have you left this off?

I wonder if the FY21 can still stabilize flight and do its other autopilot functions with just the ailerons and elevator/

Hi Hangerrat, the MS with the FY21 has a rudder fitted. I'm not sure if it will function without it.
Good luck with the build, you wont be disappointed, my SW with the FY21 and AP117 is brilliant, I fined that I use it the most.
please post up your results on hear, it will be great to see how it comes out.

Thanks G,  I might go ahead and connect up the Rudder.  I was trying to keep weight down, and the first pass is including a Nova OSD. I found a lot of folks using the Nova on this little bird are NOT using the rudder. Hmm, we'll see.

I bought two of the MS, for backup parts, etc. And because they're cheap! But I might just fit out the fuselage #2 with the FYAP, then be able to swap out the top wing/motor/esc combo.
