Inspired by the NEFPV (http://fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?35676-NEFPV-Spec-FPV-RaceWings") and CO (http://fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?35783-Colorado-Spec-FPV-Race-Popwings") guys over on FPVLAB, some of us from the UK FPV Thread (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1258125") have decided to build our own spec wings for formation flying and racing at meets. Anybody is welcome to build one of these, the more the merrier!

Sounds cool to me. :) however the links are all knacked.. got quaotes and stuff..?

Andy
Fixed... I think!
Pah', my Rocket Raven's illegal before I've even maidened it, now I know how Colin Chapman felt.
I'm in, wing ordered, now I just need to find some magic smoke to go in it......
Sounds like fun.......

Marcus

Ha! Got a ground effect racer!

Ha! Got a ground effect racer!
The ground inevitably has an effect on anything I attempt to fly.
As soon as the weather clears I say we get a course set up at the Bury Field.
Roger that, need to buy a raven first!
I'd not noticed this thread here, but coincidentally saw it on RCGroups, and checked with Brucey if it was him :)
Well, totally count me in, sounds like great fun. I love the idea of racing the same spec'd wings - it's all about the tight lines and avoiding iPeel hitting you :D
At the very least I'm always up for some close quarters formation even if I don't get to do any proper racing. c'mon, who else is in ?
I was OK until I saw -
Flight controller/stabiliser: Not allowed
hehehe ;D
I'm in ;)
I'm in... Just got to press the button :)

Andy
Gonna try keep tabs on here, as well as on RCGroups =]
Anyone around Manchester/Warrington/North Birmingham? gonna have a meet up once everyone's setup
If it works out well, a think a high speed series would go well!
Hey I'm looking to buy some laminate from Flyingwings. How much do I need to cover my Raven?
regards
Andy
Hmm, not sure, email Rob
If you're thinking of the whole airframe a metre should be more than enough....not sure how much weight it adds?
Hokey Doke. It adds weight but also stiffens it up, Maybe I'll just cover the leading edge. That is meant to be the best option.. If that is ok in the rules?

Andy

I though that was the rule Andy, leading edge only if you do laminate. Maybe we should check with Brucey Whiting.
You called! Actually was thinking more Brucey Ecclestone, but it would be wrong to fancy your own daughter!
Lamination is optional, full, leading edge or non at all.
It's looking like it might be OK next weekend, fancy the inaugural Newport Pagnell Grand Prix?
I still need too get a raven, and I'll be in the peak district next weekend. Hopefully have the vent finished so I can take it with me
Appear that wing may have laminar flow to around 75 mm at 20 m.s-1 and transition to fully turbulent flow at 150 mm.. I'm thinking laminate the first 75 mm, and the lip'll act as a turbulator..
hmm.. OTOH I'm startin to take it all too seriously
Anyway laminate the first 75 mm sounds good to me. xtra weight is all forward and good for stiffness...

Andy
I was just going to stick some fibre tape over the leading edge... that's my hi-tech approach

HeHe .. my Flyingwings Falcon has tape.. It just looks so cak. Mind you I'll prob succeed in making this racer look cak too. Think I'll try putting a film of POR under the Lam to help it stick. That foam is funny stuff and dont seem to like stuff sticking to it virgin. I used Evostick impact on the Falcon... whicjh looks like bogeys :)
Unfortunately Raven Racer will have to carry the extra weight of my OSD.. else what's the point of making the darn thing
Raven Racer ordered !
Nice one Andy. The lam will stick fine to virgin foam, I used to use a spray adhesive first, but not bothered with the vent I'm currently building and its fine.
Just make sure you put the lam adhesive side down, otherwise it makes a mess of your iron...

Well when I was out with Neil his lam was bubbling up. What was going on there then?

Wow.. Thanks indeed for that profound tip mate. ;D
What? not allowed to borrow the iron any more now then? ...Same here (solarfilm in my case!)

I think it was the temperature of my iron Andy, Caroline won't let me use her posh iron anymore so I bought a Turnigy laminating iron and was too conservative with the temperature, I've gone over it again with a hotter setting and it seems fine.
I had to use a layer of por to stick tape to my Falcon... making me think I need to lam the leading edges now. Ok, laminating virgin here, what sort do I need, and do I need that 3m spray adhesive... which stuff ?
Rob from Flyingwings will sell you some....it will stick perfectly well without any spray adhesive.

I've got 200m of the stuff Wayne, PM me your address and I'll send you a few metres.
Racer built and maiden done, fly's real fine aside from a little slop in the servos (cheap). Just need some racing action now! I'm in North Hampshire if anyone wants to meet up a swap notes/practice......

Looks good Marcus, what Vtx are you using?
It's the Aomway 200mw from banggood.

They are 100% immersion compatible but without the cost! I have 2 of them now you cant go wrong for £20, and stocked in the UK warehouse for quick delivery.
rgds,
Marcus
Where abouts are you Sy? There are a few of us in Reading that are looking to join the Raven racing.

Can I ask if you've tested them to any distance, I had thought that the 32 channel VTX's weren't quite on the immersion bands and so dropped off over any distance... or perhaps that's the 32 ch rx's trying to pick up immersion stuff.
However, the price is excellent, so if this works flawlessly even just to 500m, then excellent for mini quads, and wings like this
Hey Gents, I'm in burghclere just south of Newbury, so not far from reading. Let me know when where you fly and I'd be happy to meet up.
Re the vtx I've only been out to 400 yards (still perfect signal) on this one as it is only for short range fpv. However my other 500mw aomway on my fx61 has been 5km with a 3 turn helical on my attitude v2's. The aomway's also output 5v just like the immersion stuff, for the cam.

I use an IRC Tx with a 32ch Rx without issue but I have heard of this. Perhaps it's just marketing spiel, I see no reason why one should not work with the other..
I thought you would all like to know my exciting news ...................Raven Racer has arrived!( If you got this far...Thanks for your attention. regards Andy)
Nice one Andy, I still need to get mine.

Well my Raven will have to have a FC on it even if it's against the rules.. since I want it as a testbed for my OSD. Its a nice size to swing around inside for testing. Just hope it'll handle the weight of GPS, mag and airspeed sensor

I guess if there's an option for no stabilisation then a FC doesn't hurt

With everything I'm planning to put on mine including FC... it'll be lucky to get off the ground... let alone win any races.

Well, when I looked at the wing I wondered if I'd need to mount my camera off-centre... which you guys have pretty much confirmed... unless you have some tiny thing.

I bought one of these from Banggood: http://www.banggood.com/FPV-14-CMOS-HD-Color-Camera-Module-600TVL-120-Degree-Wide-Angle-p-944546.html (http://www.banggood.com/FPV-14-CMOS-HD-Color-Camera-Module-600TVL-120-Degree-Wide-Angle-p-944546.html)
They're the size of the original FatShark cameras and run on anything from 5-15v. I knocked up a plate that acts as both the battery mount and the FPV cam mount:
As Brucey pointed out last weekend, the camera's toast if I have a nose-in but the way I usually crash, everything is.
Neil,
You could try an enclosed mount like I used n MySpeedster..
Not the same shape obviously..
I'm tempted to sink it into the wing like I did on the Falcon...
Good for speed and looks , but the unfortunate side effect is that, when the ground is wet... it acts as a water scoop. :pint: Might do it again, but have the option this time to lift up out of the muck for those squelchy flying sessions...

Managed to get out at weekend and try get some formation going, still needs some rates setting up!

Looks like you got the makings of a good racecourse there.. 5 or 6 Ravens going through those tree gaps and there will be Mayhem and Carnage ..
(BTW: remove the s from httpS and your vid looks like ...)

Yeh not a bad spot, some lovely arching lines here and there
ah cheers! Will keep that in mind =]
By Crikey it flew! I was so expecting to bring the thing back in a bin bag and I only had time for a quick circuit but it was really nice! Launched with half throttle and never even got near full. Might dial down the rates as it's fairly lively and the elevons need adjusting as it has a nose diving tendency, but it all went much better than I imagined!
It's the first time I've built something like this so there was plenty of opportunity to make a mess of it. It needs the loose ends tidying up but I'm looking forward to trying it out fpv now.
