Title: BE2c Maidened at last
Post by: Chris in Kabul on September 20, 2011, 02:53:32 PM
In February of this year I purchased, at great expense, A 1/5 scale BE2c from E-bay.
Since then I have kitted it out with a new OS 120 Pumped motor, on board glow and a scale lewis gun.
British weather being as it is and my short stints at home meant I had to wait until mid September to catch a break in the weather to attempt the maiden.
It took about an hour to rig all the wires and fit the wings the first time. I also had to renew some of the control wires that had seen better days.
Anyway after it's first taste of nitro and a quick hit with the starter she was raring to go.
A couple of clicks on the needle and she was running sweet.
She lifted off on about 1/2 throttle and clawed gracefully into the air. Although she has 4 barn doors for ailerons, rudder had to be used to make the turns balanced. Apparently this was the same on the full sized versions.
Anyway, after a few fly bys for the camera she was brought home to end the very successfull and pleasing maiden flight.
I'm looking forward to December and more flights with her, possibly with a camera on board and eventually she'll be FPV'ed up.
I think you'll agree she looks the business.

I'm glad you all like it. Just wish I had a bigger car so I could return it to my own home instead of leaving it at a friends place.
If anyone is interested, I have done a complete article on the BE2c and where I got my inspiration from. It is on my website at:

Just so you can see the actual size of her, I've posted a couple more pictures.

Good article, very interesting reading - the thing is massive! Not sure my missus would allow my models to stay on my bed though hehe  :o
