I have several fixed wings and a DJI F450 which I play with but am looking to move towards a 250.
Can anyone recommend a setup and frame please?
depends on your budget.
if you want plug and play the gemini from TBS is nice, if you want 4 props not 6 then the blackout x-hover or luminier have some lovely high end 250's, then you can come down the pole to the 20-60 dollar frames, zmr etc... Naze 32 seems the flight controller of choice.
Motors, again depend on budget, T-motors being the top with a plethora of other makes coming through. anything from $12 each upwards.
I made a cheap FPV race trainer from a 200qx with mobius and 200mw vtx on it as I lost my Gemini.
flies fast and has a rock solid hover for landing...

IMHO the best options are either the hobbyking fpv260 frame with long cage on top, or the emax 250 (the gf/glossy is fine, the pure carbon is very nice indeed), both are really nice frames and very cheap.
I really like the emax motors either 1806 or 2204 depending how power crazy you plan to be, they are very nice quality have low profile 5mm output shafts with self tightening props, and all std props just drop on with no adaptors needed.
ESC's anything with simonk is fine, and FC I still like the simplicity of the KK2, but the naze32 is undoubtedly better performing and setup is about as simple as a computer based config can be, you do need a laptop/netbook to take to the field to tune though.
Lipos 1300mah 3S work great for 6 min flights, if you want more flight time, want more packs, 40C and upwards will last longer, Turnigy 45-90C last about a year of regular flying, zippy compact 40C may be better but too soon to be sure, they are all cheap as chips though, so no biggy.
You can buy the bits piecemeal from banggood in china or hobbyking hong kong as cheapest way, but I was shocked to see the prices at makeitbuildit, they are very nearly same as china, you just pay the extra for next day UK delivery, which even I think is a great deal and I'm a skinflint. I cancelled a banggood order for motors last week and ordered from makeitbuildit instead, they came next day and basically just cost me the postage!
makeitbuildit also has frame combo's complete with esc/motor/fc so if a combination they have suits you the price is hard to beat.

Not heard of rmx, I am using rcx 1804s which were fine when it was all you could get, but not sure you can still get them, all the recent ones I've seen are ZMR branded version which seem to throw magnets almost continuously from what I've seen, if you love super glue thats not a problem, but its less fun than flying. 1804 motors are too small now, when there are much better 1806/2204 options.
DYS motors may be technically superior but the tall prop adaptor magnifies vibration, and the rate we change props we don't want to bother with balancing, also when you are basically deliberately crashing into a field/tree/xxx its probably better to just use cheaper motors and buy spares than to worry about best and shiniest ;) Emax motor shafts/clips are 50p and the bearing set is a pound I think ;)
you can use flap carbon props on DYS motors.
I mean DYS got a lot better bearings and there is no play in them, I never balance props for mini quads and my mobius is just glued with velcro straight to frame - no jello at all...:)
Hi,my setup is a Zmr frame,naze 32 acro fc,emax 12a esc,2208 2300kv emax motors running 1400-2200 zippys 3s 25-35c spinning 5x4.5 props.couple this with a immersion rc 600mw vtx the fat shark 600vtl camara from the predator goggle kit and it's been strong and silly fast yet tame enough to fly through silly small gaps in bushes,trees,your house ect.ive not once snapped a motor arm but shit loads of props and motor prop nuts after crashes.less than £200 in the basic none fpv setup plus say 5/10 batts at £10ish a pop then fatshark goggle set at £250ish soon adds up but if you have these then all good.few things I found on the zmr frame is build it to run the batt on the bottom of the frame as flys way way better and extra standoffs as legs stopping the batt from crash damage.buy the bottom plate leg mounting spacer kit as this realy helps build a tidy frame.mount the vtx under the top plate middle ish then bend the arial up out the back cable tieing it about 1/2" away from vtx as this will then not snap the vtx arial connector off in a crash.zip tie and hot gluing the 600vtl works a treat also keeping it inside the frame also but tilt it up way way up as you will soon be screaming across the ground looking straight at the floor if not.hq props all the way for me also,5x3 are pants 6x4.5 are to floaty and makes power very low down even moving mid throttle up still to twitchy for slow and tight fvp.also when chasing a tree line and then need to drop fast under a branch it takes far to long to loose height (for me)5x4.5 bullnose are awsome for all tipes of flying.You may know all of this but thought I'd helps anyway.makeitbuildit sell loads of stuff and phil is a (very) helpful and all round good bloke to deal with.Hope this helps lee

Nope, but the only other place I can find official frames at a reasonable price is getfpv. For a UK distributor I don't think it's too bad.

£115 for a 250 frame 'not too bad', you could put a complete quad together with FPV gear for less than that using emax motors/esc's, fpv260 frame/cage, banggood vtx/camera combo, OrangeRx receiver and naze32 - you'd even have a few quid left over for heatshrink ;)
I think the reason people are scared to race their 250s is they have spent too much on them, so they end up with shelf queens.
Cheap and cheerful is definitely the way to go for miniquads ;)
I'll second that I bought a cheap kit from HobbyKing. if you give it any speed you are likely to inflict some damage. Make sure you fix everything to the frame firmly, no lose wires, wobbly protruding parts and similar. Try to put some padding between electronics and the frame in order to avoid short-cuts.

3x emax 12a esc (Simonk firmware) from Banggood uk
Full flip32 board from Banggood UK.
Infact everything except frame same from there.
Delivered in 1-2 days.
I then ordered the hc-06 bt module from there.
And wired it up to the flip32 last night
Works great using ez-gui app from play store.
App works great at first look.
I unlocked the locked features for the grand sum of £2.82
No laptop required
