So laminating EPP is all the rage and I want to do that to my EPP wing.
Anyone have a good supplier in the UK for laminate roll for this purpose? Any idea what sort of micron thickness I should be getting?
Search the forum dude, its been asked before all the info is on here.

Hi Dogzilla
what sort of laminate are you talking about I know this might be a dumb question but I am a newbie after all.
Tonka
I just got some of this.

Hi G (Got the name correct this time )
the cost on your link is stunning this material is usually designed for the sign makers market for vehicle graphics and is exspensive, a cheaper alternative is to pop into your local sign shop and get some printed in whatever design you want.

P.S
I work for a company that sells the equipment to print onto the rolls of self adhesive materials for the sign trade.

I think its 3D Jim that covered his wing with this, it looks cool.
all the best Karma.
I'm talking about plastic laminate, the sort of stuff that you might use to laminate paper or signs or whatever.
It's supposed to be excellent for EPP planes. so much so you don't have to bother with strapping tape. Just laminate the whole thing.
Only problem is I can only find suppliers selling 50 meter rolls.
Dogzilla,
I have 2no 100m rolls of the stuff (less some given to mates)
If you are anywhere near me (Darlington) you can have some for free, I think the rolls are 600mm wide (I'm not up for posting it out though)
Same applies to any FPV buddies up north..... if you can get to Darlington you can have some.
PK
I might take you up on that PK when I am back in the Boro visiting the parents.
No problem, just PM me when you are coming up this way next :)
Unfortunately I'm a southern softy so Darlington is way too far for me!

I've looked throughout the forum and I cannot find the information I need, that is why I posted this thread in the first place.
Right now I'm probably gonna end up stumping up for a 50m roll of stuff from bindingsupplies.co.uk.
I've just ordered 50m roll of of 125micron high gloss laminate, 635mm wide.
I'll let you know how it all goes down onto my EPP wing.
If anyone is interested I'll be selling the stuff by the meter because I don't need 50 meters of the stuff. Cost price works out to be £1/meter plus whatever p+p costs. It should be wide enough to cover most things.
Marcin, yes.... I've got a digital temp controlled film iron, just enough heat to get it to stick without melting the foam and before you put it on spray the wing with 3M90 spray adhesive.
PK
Yea it's low melt heat activated, so should iron on with a typical hobby iron.
I haven't got it yet, should be here tomorrow I hope. I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes!
Hi all!
So my laminate turned up yesterday and I wasted no time in trying it out...
First thoughts are.... 635mm is super wide! I was able to cover my Slipstream with just over a meter per side in one large sheet... so in theory should be stronger than multiple strips.
I tried various temperatures with my hobby iron on a bit of scrap. It will stick down quite easily with my iron on 30% without overly heating the underlying surface, so if you have any delicate items this stuff works quite well.
I eventually settled on quite a high heat because it sticks down very quickly and means I can work quite fast without having to leave the iron in one spot for too long. In my mind it's better to get the laminate on quick rather than have the heat build up in the EPP behind.
It doesn't have much shrink... so you aren't gonna get a perfectly smooth finish on bare EPP without without additional finishing, that being said it's quite decent and more than enough for me. (and I've been told I've got a bit of OCD when it comes to finish)
I used Oracover EPP glue in advance, this is a solvent impregnated with heat activated glue, you brush it on lightly to the EPP and it dries within about 30 minutes without leaving a sticky residue. I haven't tried directly to EPP because I have no scrap EPP but I believe people generally treat EPP in advance of covering.
I've found a guy local to me selling post tubes for a £1. So if anyone is interested in buying some covering please send me a PM.
5 meters + second class postage = £9. Sorry it's the best I can do once you add in postage and the tubes, but it beats spending £60 on a roll.

Hadn't realised you wanted laminate film, not covering film, but this was posted a few weeks ago ;)

Bit strange considering the thread was titled "UK supplier for laminate roll".
I don't know why people don't just link to the website anyway instead of sanctimoniously telling people to do a search. We're all here to help each other out Shirley? :)
Binding Supplies is where I got mine as well. The 50M is a bit (lot) much but all the more to practise with!
I don't use the stuff, and its on GC as covering/building stuff.
But if the info is already there, why make another thread? Gets drilled in on bigger forums.
Anyhows, Like the Carbon Fibre covering/laminate/film. If I ever get round to building a wing...
Is 75 microns the standard stuff? I have read people referring to its thickness in "mil"- some claim using "3-7 mil" which can't be mm :s
It's micron. People are getting their units wrong
And yes, 75 micron is enough to strengthen the wing unless you're after some serious armour.

so when people say mil they are out by a factor of 100- 0.07 mil = 7 microns?
mil is 1/1,000 'th of an inch
micron is 1/1,000'th of a millimetre. or 1/1,000,000'th of a metre
micron is a vastly superior unit... actually should be called a micrometre or um
Once I discovered what the SI system of Units (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_System_of_Units) was, I suddenly found that simple Physics stuff was much easier to calculate without all those dumb incompatible units I had struggled with before
