I'd been waiting to try and get some distance on my l9r since I got it, but my Bixler doesn't like strong wind, so I've been waiting. However, we managed it at Mad Dogs and it did 5km with ease. Kind of freaky for a 2.4 rx, and it felt like it could have gone a few km more

What will a x8r go to? Also what battery are you doing the 5km with?

it depends... is the first answer. On how your stuff is laid out, the antenna config, what sort of day it is. I'd expect it to be on par with the d4r-ii+ which got to 3.5km before it lost telemetry... although this doesn't mean it wasn't controllable at that distance, it's just that the radio wasn't getting telemetry back.
I do mention the lipo in the video, it's a multistar 4a 3s http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__56846__Multistar_High_Capacity_3S_4000mAh_Multi_Rotor_Lipo_Pack.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__56846__Multistar_High_Capacity_3S_4000mAh_Multi_Rotor_Lipo_Pack.html) It's not too much bigger than a higher C 2200, but for quite an extended flight time.
Nice flight Wayne
Always good to see other peoples vids using my gear
Also seemed to work well in the clouds which smacks the 5.8 and damp rule in the mouth a bit
Try the 5 turn next then when you feel really brave strap on the 12, then we'll see how far you really can go, 20k I reckon ;)
Challenge set
Nice work Wayne, I've been using these for a while now and they have been great. Rock solid signal every time! Sorry if I missed it on the vid but what VTx were you using?
Great vid!
Very impressive, 5km is a long way(in my mind anyway) :D I guess you wouldn't try it without RTH. How do you keep lined up with the helical on your goggles? Do you fly out straight and back along the same route or actively track with your head?

I probably forgot to mention, it's an ImmersionRC 600mw VTX

I wouldn't try it without RTH, but I'm trying to never get to the point where I'd actually need it either. Tracking with your head is really pretty simple. There's quite a wide beam on a 3 turn and it drops off quite gently as you get away from the centre so it just a case of some small movements to see if it's getting better/worse, and then the case of keeping your head quite still.
Although I attempt to fly in one direction and return on the same path, the wind can have some other ideas - which is how I got into the situation where I was starting to point behind myself.
Nicely done Wayne. Shame about the antennas being fixed.
Look forward to seeing you with a 12 turn helical strapped to your head!
Impressed with the performance there with the video gear alone, especially when flying through the cloud :)
Cant fault the Frsky receiver.
Was that recorded with the gogs or separate DVR.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Seperate DVR - I use this one http://www.bevrc.com/bevrc-pv700-high-quality-digital-video-recorder_p297.html (http://www.bevrc.com/bevrc-pv700-high-quality-digital-video-recorder_p297.html) and it's case fastens in my goggle strap so I'm still free of trailing wires (and also I've got the Dom v1's which don't have a built-in DVR)
Im still trying to find a way of strapping my laptop to my head so i cant also be wire free.
Good to see the video quality as i ordered a 3 turn last week. Just need to get something working to try it out on. :-[
Bit of a thread hijack but what happened to your fx79 m8?

It's all fixed up ready to try again, I've been distracted by many other projects - but hopefully get it in the air soon
