Title: Best way of drilling hole in wing for big spar?
Post by: Billy_boy_2010 on June 27, 2015, 09:44:15 AM
Hi guys

I have a Venturi evo which, after a few issues with it's thrust angle, the centre section is on its last legs.

The wings, however, are in great condition so I think if I remove the centre section I could mate the two wings and create a smaller wing.

The central spar is keeping the wings apart so I will cut through it and remove the extra 3-4" so the wings can join.

However, I need to add at least one large central spar for obvious reasons. I will put it right next to the original spar. What's the best way of drilling into the foam? My drill bits are only 4-6" long and I would like to bury the spar at least 10" in each side. Perhaps some kind of hot poker of the correct diameter?

I know I could cut huge grooves into each wing and drop the spar in and secure with gorilla glue but I would rather not do it this way.

Any help from the creative scratch building types would be great thanks!

A bit of tube/pipe with the ends sharpened, providing you can find some the right diameter. The tricky bit with this is doing it so the wings will be correctly aligned once joined, hence it is probably more accurate to align the wings and follow the cut-a-slot method albeit not so neat.

What issues have you has with the thrust angle to warrant removing the centre section? Sounds like there is something more fundamental wrong

I agree with Brucey, the centre section would need to be an absolute wreck to warrant that level of surgery. Surely the best approach would be to make good.

The motor mount would need to be out by 30 degrees or so to have a thrust angle that would make the thing uncontrollable.

too minimize the work I would use the spar as a drill by modifying the end by scoring or cutting slots with a hack saw use a drill chuck under power or by hand  to cut into one wing until its deep enough remove and then glue in with gorilla glue,  then cut a slot in the other wing section to accommodate a tube to fit so it can be dismantled or glue as you require :)
