Title: Hobbyking Teksumo initail spec advice
Post by: JAB1a on July 22, 2015, 02:40:33 PM
Hi All,

Well I have finally cracked, watching awesome FPV wing video's since 2010 its about time I got up in the air with one of these strange long flat wing things, seems there are 3x motors, ESC's and props missing compared to my normal setup  ;D

This wing will be to get me used to flying close proximity to train me up for something bigger and faster at a later date. What I want is a nice cruise speed but also enough punch to do some unlimited vertical flying.

I just wanted to get peoples idea's/hints on the setup I have picked so far...

1x Teksumo..

3xServo (one as a spare)

1x motor 1450Kv

5x prop 8x6
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__43981__APC_style_propeller_8x6_E_UK_Warehouse_.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__43981__APC_style_propeller_8x6_E_UK_Warehouse_.html)

These parts come to about ~£38

I was thinking of running my old 20Amp Skywalker ESC's and the Nano-tech 1300mAh lipo's, also the wing will have a Runcam HD fitted.

At a later date FPV gear will be added (Mini PZ0420M in case, OSD, mini quad vTx+ Gav antenna)

I guess most might know my kind of flying with the quads, I would like the same kind of agility but of course translated into a flying wing, I don't want to be flying a heavy, sluggish, wollowing thing, I need snappy, crisp controls ;)

Thank you in advance for any tips and help

What voltage are you going to run? That prop seems a bit big IMO. For a more punchy setup you might want to consider something like a 2000kv motor and a smaller prop like a 6", this will help reduce the torque roll too.

That's the kind of things I needed to know, thanks for the info. I am going 3s to start with.

Do you have any suggestions on the exact motor and props I should use? Hobbyking UK warehouse links would be nice but just the titles of the items will help me a lot.

Thank you for your time mate

I got a load of the multirotor DYS 1804 2300Kv motors, they run fine on 6x3 props, would this be any use or am I talking nonsense?

They seem a bit weedy mate, my go-to motor is the 2826/6 2200kv. It's a great motor and can take 4S fine. You might want to up spec your ESC, at least a 30a if you want a faster setup, you may get away with your current ESC initially on a 3S setup.

Here's the motor:

Given the aggressive mental nature of your miniquad flying im guessing you will want some adrenaline from your wing too ;)

I had a tek sumo an it was great LOS- but i ruined it by cutting lots of foam out and beefing everything up with big 4s and fpv kit until it became heavy and crashed lots.

I have since gone through two skyfuns and I much prefer them tbh. Far better in every way IMO.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=36736 (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=36736)

The build is quicker, you dont have to dick about cutting into the foam for every component like you would a tek sumo as the skyfun has that lovely aerodynamic hatch. Also the centre of gravity is far easier to hit with the long nose (absolutely vital on a wing and if you get it tail heavy you will very likely crash!)

The most fun i have had from a wing was flying around several rugby pitches flying between goal posts etc. As you dont have anything like the adjustment and agility of a quad you need more space and need to be going much slower- at least to begin with. IMO this means you need the option of keeping the plane light.

On windy days- or if you want to go tor cruising and travel some distance- you could stick a bigger heavier battery in it (which will help with both of these two issues) and easily hit CG by moving them around.

This makes for a very fast skyfun

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21481__NTM_Prop_Drive_28_36_2200KV_696W.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21481__NTM_Prop_Drive_28_36_2200KV_696W.html)

Or the lower kv model would be more efficient with battery and it would still be quick

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21480__NTM_Prop_Drive_28_36_1800KV_438W.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21480__NTM_Prop_Drive_28_36_1800KV_438W.html)

Provided you have a 4s capable esc and motor there's no harm in using 3s to begin with and, if you ever want something quicker, all you need are 4s batteries. Running 3s also makes it easier for fpv gear assuming you run on 12V.

Finally- Coyote has a fantastic build thread on his skyfun. He has specced it up with a full autopilot and a whopping battery (the skyfun can manage some quite good ranges) but IMO for your first wing- keep it lighter and more simple.

If you dont have any 4s batteries you could run a couple of your older more knackered miniquad batteries in parallel to give you 2700maH of 3s- which would be more than enough for the first few months. You dont need high discharge batteries for wings (unless you're after something absolutely mental)- so if you do plan on buying batteries- save some £ and weight by buying standard discharge.

Be careful- wings are quick and you can lose orientation and direction very easily :) Having said that your flying locations are so stunning and distinctive im sure you will be fine :)

Hi, I had them servos in my Teksumo, but the elevons are large and it stripped the servo gears in no time. Have upgraded to metal gear Tower Pro. Had no problems since.

I wouldn't use those servo's in it either.
My mate has gone through 2 in he's so far.
They are pretty weak to be honest.

I had analog metal gear turnigy servo's in mine.
And they worked faultlessly.

My Teksumo is now dead though (RIP)
It was my own fault though, forgot to ca the nut on the aileron, and it decided to let go.

I had a 40A turnigy plush, 2 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__38062__Turnigy_TGY_50090M_Metal_Gear_9g_Analog_Servo_UK_Warehouse_.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__38062__Turnigy_TGY_50090M_Metal_Gear_9g_Analog_Servo_UK_Warehouse_.html) servo's
and the forget what motor it was, with a 7x6 prop on it.

It flew agressively, I have the motor downstairs and will find out.

I am in the process of getting everything together for my Teksumo build.....

But I will be using one of these:

http://hangarcats.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=37&zenid=89c1e49828b3ee62f69785e9f444466a (http://hangarcats.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=37&zenid=89c1e49828b3ee62f69785e9f444466a)

It is really well cut, and will make placement of battery and fpv gear a lot easier......

I will be using a sunnysky 2212/1400kv motor with either an 8 or 9 inch prop - not after outright speed, but a nice balance of thrust/duration....

The monkeyblunt style certainly makes the tek sumo a more attractive fpv plane. But for the additional hassle and money IMO a skyfun is the way to go.

I still have a brand new skyfun upstairs actually- not used it yet but its waiting to be build :)

I had a tek sumo monkey blunt... didn't end well, ended up in the sea... but that was due to a EzUHF glitch, nothing to do with the monkeyblunt itself.

there are 2 schools of thought... you can have a 1400kv motor (2826-10, from hobbyking) with a 8x4 prop... with a 3S 2200mah LiPo you can get 20+ minutes off one LiPo

or you can have a faster plane, with the 2200kv motor (2826-6, from hobbyking) with a smaller 6x4 prop... you'll get less initial thrust as the column of air being pushed backwards is smaller, but it will be faster, however don't expect flight times as long as the previous setup

both setups are perfectly fine for the teksumo... but please please please.... keep it as light as you can, a heavy teksumo is a crash waiting to happen, regardless of how well you've balanced the CG.

p.s. if you want a much better airframe than a teksumo with a monkeyblunt... might as well get a Falcon Evo FPV... #justsaying ;)

Just finished my Tek Sumo using the same set up as Friesianflyer and a 3300mAh 3 cell lipo.
Very pleased with the quality of the airframe and the Monkeyblunt section and also impressed with the way it flew once I managed to set the correct amount of reflex.
I'll have another go when summer arrives!! :o
