Hi All.
Was looking at upgrading my Tornado OSD to a pixhawk. After looking at it maybe the Pixhawk is a better option for my 410mm quad with a Camera Gimbal as well. I currently have a Naze32 in it and have never been able to get the GPS hold and home working smoothly. I guess its a work in progress for the Naze32 and also you are locked into having the compass on the main board so cant get it away from all the noise.
The PixHawk seems to be reasonable well priced and have heaps of options.
For the people that know more about these things than me.
What are the downsides to the Pixhawk?
What features do maybe other FC have that might be better.
Would be nice to be able to use the same type of FC in my plane and multi. Much easier than having to keep up with multiple controller updates and progress. These open source projects tend to move rather fast.
Cheers
I've been using the pixhawk (genuine and clone) for a while now and have had great success. It takes a bit more work to get it nicely set up, but the autotune feature helps a lot and makes it easier too.
So far I've only used it on a fixed wing, but I plan to fit a pixhawk to,a large quad build over the next few months.
I Love my pixhawk

Yeah was looking online and noticed some had shaped boxes and some rectangle with straight side. Guessing the rectangle ones are the clones? IS there any other way to tell? Different boards maybe ?
Guessing they wont be harder to setup than PID tuning a Naze32?
There is a collection of sensors you can get. Do you have to have the Air speed sensor for it to work well in all modes or can you just set the throttle manually? I have airspeed setup on my Tornado but after a while turned it off and just set manually.
Also for Auto land do you have to have the sonar sensor? Guessing it will work better with that. Not that I have any need to autoland but thought it might be something new to have a go at.
Cheers
My Setup The PID tuning is Auto.

Thanks a lot. I watched that video. It seems the more I learn about it the more I like it. Just discovered it got a follow me mode. I have been wanting to do that for a project in the background for a while. Looks like its a step closer to happening.
Im living in China at the mo so buy everything of the Chinese Equivalent of Ebay. This is the one I have in my cart. So that banggood link shows the difference between the 2 power supply IC's. Looks like this one has the good IC. ???
Getting the option with the current sensor.

I have this GPS. If I can reuse would be nice. Says on the cover its got a compass but only has 4 wires. One of which is the shield which is ground from memory. So cant see how it has. Maybe can plug into the PC and check when I get a chance.

This is the one you want to get because it's got compass built in and uses the compass in the pixhawk to. Also Ublox NEO-M8N and the one you show me in the link is only a U-blox7 And not as fast to get the satellites locked.
Go for this one it is very fast it locks up the satellites within seconds. I am so surprised of the speed of it and for the money. And plugs straight in.

So bit the bullet and got this package. Still really no nothing about these things but plenty of people seem to give them a good rap and seen lots of good youtube vids.
I got the 433 mhz telemetry. Not really sure what that does. Assuming so you can change missions in flight and view all on the ground? I use 2.4 radio and 5.8 video so figure the 433 is good with that.
Also got the M8N GPS, looks like it has the 2 cables one for compass and GPS that should plug straight in.
Guess the only missing options are air speed sensor and sonar. Guess will get the basics running and go form there.
I played for ages trying to get the GPS hold working on the Naze32 with a clone F550. With the Naze you only have the option of the compass on the board. With the power distribution board on the F550 the electrical noise was so much I was getting more than 90 deg error on the compass from sitting with no throttle and hover throttle. Never going to work. So built a new custom frame and no power distributions and got the ESC on the other end to the controller and now get almost no error. The GPS hold was still very average but. Maybe a 10m radius.
Cheers
Yeah get the basics working first. You only need the airspeed sensor for fixed wing. The sonar won't work well on grass, only hard surfaces.
So is the sonar only used for position hold? I would like to think the GPS can hold it fairly good. Dont have any real need to lock it in within cm.
I thought the sonar might also be used for auto landing. Not that I really have any need for that other than to play with it.
At first I was going to get to replace the Tornado in my FX61. But after looking at all the cool features I might stick it in my 410 Quad first and give it a go in that. If I like it ill get another for the plane. Then maybe a airspeed sensor would be good.
Can you deactivate the airspeed sensor on a plane if you dont want to use it? Just set the throttle manually? That's what I do on the tornado. Never really liked the auto throttle.
Cheers
Yes, you can choose not to use it if you like, but for me at least the airspeed sensor made the auto missions etc much better as it's able to to take account for wind.
