Post by: BigT on December 31, 2015, 04:54:50 PM
So now we know why Charles the founder of MFD has been on the missing list

Happy New Year!

If that's the reason why he has not been giving customer support, not shipping orders out on time and not following up on tracking details then I am far from remotely impressed.

Who gives a shit about a MFD VTOL really ?

There is no way one earth its going to VTOL with the weight of the lipos in it for any range anyway, and the trust needed destroys its range capabilities. Stupid project IMO.

Honestly the guy has got his priorities completely wrong.

someone's taking the pee here... a "video" which is just a still photo of a plane with what looks like spinning props on the wingtips....

I'm more than skeptical, I'll go so far as to say what a load of "%$%£$%*

Apparently the Australian MFD agent has had actual video of the first flight trials

I'm with Ian on this.its not a good idea. He should be improving the build quality of the MTD and supported products.

As promised I have sent an email to the leaked address on the mfd web site expressing my feelings re customer care. I will do the same to his whatsap number. I suggest others do the same, it may get do the trick. But as I have said before the far eastern mindset is not the same as us in the west.

It seems this needs to be a 6 monthly thing. Weren't we all doing pretty much the same thing in the summer?

One problem is that they sell direct with crap support as well as through distributors. Unfortunately the distributors get next to nothing in markup based on direct sales; it makes it really difficult for guys like Rob to remain competitive while providing the support they want to give and customers want to receive.

I'm in the process on drawing up initial designs for my own tracker hardware that interfaces with more or less anything (ImmersionRC, EagleTree, APM:Tracker) while providing true 360 degree tracking. When that's ready and when Andy's hardware is available for integrated APM + OSD I reckon' I'll be off.

Interesting. One issue with the mfd tracker that I was not aware of until I used one is that if the tracking signal gets lost for any reason, failed vtx, blocked signal, interference, the tracker has to be manually realigned so it can re acquire the vtx, leaving the pilot "blind" and as in my case, panicking. How hard would it be to have the tracker search for the signal?   Stupidly I had not realised that the tracker had to have a clear view of the model if it was on 5.8!  Also if the tracker loses power for any reason then it's game over,

It's something that's never really happened to me. I lose tracking quite a bit but that's usually when I'm something like classified away so even if I was tacking right-left say I would still have a long way to go before I was out of beam width.

The concept with my tracker is not to mess too much with the tracker protocols, I intend to keep it simple and accept pan instructions through PWM with say 1000us being 0 degrees, 2000us being 359 degrees. My logic would then use a magnetometer to determine the current heading and track to the heading inferred by the PWM signal, if the PWM signal drops quickly then I know to track past 360 degrees rather than reverse back to 0 degrees. I wouldn't be aware that the signal was not being received as I'm not processing tracking instructions directly. A byproduct of this is that you don't need to perform the tracker dance you normally need to conduct with Immersion and EagleTree to train it on its heading.

I need to evaluate the current GhettoTracker project as much of what I want to achieve may already have been implemented, if so then great, all I need to do is provide a good open sourced hardware design for people to print or have printed.

There are already a few good ghetto designs on thingiverse.com

Well things may be worse than I thought. Both my emails to MFD have pinged back with this message

The remote mail system said: Ip frequency limited. http://service.mail.qq.com/cgi-bin/help?subtype=1&&id=20022&&no=1000725 (http://service.mail.qq.com/cgi-bin/help?subtype=1&&id=20022&&no=1000725)

Now I am no expert on the interweb but to me that means the mailboxes are full?

Looks like it:

Error Cause: The server IP's transmission frequency exceeds Tencent mailbox limit.
Tencent mailbox server from the same external IP transmission of a certain frequency limits:
1, more than letters per minute limit, this IP address is prohibited transmit several minutes.
2, transmission capacity per hour limit, this IP address is prohibited transmit several hours.
3, more than the daily transmission capacity limit, this IP address banned from the present day letter.
4, the above frequency limit values belong Tencent mailbox confidential data without disclosure.
Recommendations for improvement: If you are the administrator of the server IP, halt the transmission of the server IP, reducing the frequency of re-attempt transmission later.
If you are an individual mailbox user, please report this situation to your e-mail provider.

lol. I can't listen to this blatant defamation of a good mans character. My good man Ali Shan Mao told me that Charles is an incredible, brilliant man so I'm sorry, you mere minions who have actually purchased this equipment can't possibly know what you're talking about.

Given how much range the MTD has in the tank anyway, using VTOL to get it up into the air might not be as terrible as you think it is in terms of range. Even if you lost 25% range it would still be a very capable plane

Also given his track record in terms of product design, I would have thought people would have more charity before shitting on the idea especially without seeing it in action first.

I shall reserve judgement until I see it in action and what kind of numbers it will do. Perhaps they will strap on a 3 meter wing extension and go 200km  ;D

Thing is, it's not like you needed much space to launch the MTD anyway.

I suppose that if you literally want/need to land in a very tight space then it's good - I'd perhaps see that touted as one of these completed automated take off, survey and land jobs in that case

Also if you're busting range you're going for efficiency (one thing VTOL is not renowned for).

BUT ... what if this is something for the likes of Amazon ... VTOL for dispatch + delivery + return to home ... flying much more efficiently home...

Best of both worlds... now to just work on the payload capacity...

Landing is a bit different though, I guess it depends on whether you are expecting to land in one piece or just crash it on the spot. Both are viable in terms of getting out of the air but I'd recommend landing it with plenty of room :)
