Title: B4UFLY
Post by: electrotor on January 07, 2016, 04:17:37 PM
FAA releases beta testing version of B4UFLY app which tells users about current or upcoming requirements and restrictions in areas of the National Airspace System (NAS) where they may want to operate their unmanned aircraft system (UAS). The app can be downloaded from the Google Play or the App Store.

Honest question guv: do we really need FAA stuff on a UK forum? Newbies are confused enough without being supplied information that, while interesting, is irrelevant to getting started. I'm not sure the US forums post about CAA legalities that's all...

Interesting ... I wonder if there will be a UK version for UK NOTAM's.  if that was tied in with a weather APP, it could be useful for planning  your flying day without coming face to face with the Red Arrows...

Andy

This section of the Forum was specifically started for regulation and legalities topics. Newbies have another section.

As regards the relevance of FAA stuff, aviation regulators worldwide increasingly have a great deal of commonality, the FAA and EASA being the big players. Within Europe more and more of the regulation of civilian aviation, which includes small unmanned aircraft, be that for recreational or commercial purposes, is being taken over by EASA. It does not follow that one regulator will automatically adopt or adapt anothers regulation but for the sake of having a heads up on what is happening elsewhere, the FAA stuff or indeed any other country's new developments affecting FPV is worth a mention. When all said and done, if it's of no interest to an individual, there's no compulsion to read it. It's there for those who may be interested.

I'm certainly interested in legality of FPV around the world :) Post on I say.

And as for the app, that's awesome. Perhaps DJI could update their app to interface with national rules and regs and NOTAM/NoFlyZones etc.... and provide an update to their users before they fly. Perhaps even stopping them from taking off all-together. Or even, alerting the authorities so that a dangerous drone can be siezed before it has a chance to kill someone :)

Fair do's but the banner says Home of UK FPVers and there seems to be a lot of chat about legalities lately - if most of it turns into whats happening in the US, Brazil, France, etc then I feel it'll be to the detriment of people just wanting to read the upbeat stuff.

Can't we just have a single thread? It's not like any of this information has a very long life anyway and the forum is going to end up a dumping ground for loads of irrelevant information as time goes on. Unless you're going to prune every historic thread. Remember, it will continually come up in search results on both here and search engines like Google and Bing.

Or maybe a single thread per country .. "UK FPV Regulations" .. "US Regulations" "French" etc.

I would have thought a discussion about an App that helps you know where you can and can't fly in the US would be better suited to the General Discussion area, rather than a FPV Legalities area.

I'm not fussed about hearing about USA or European regs, just as long as it's clearly segregated from any Official UK FPV Legal information... perhaps sub forums in the legalities area... UK and Rest of the world?

That way there's no confusion...

I've already had a nob at work who knows I fly FPV approach me all smug like, saying "ha, you've got to register your drones now"... I just said, no that's in America mate.

Coyote set up this section to contain threads about regulation, legalities and any other related topics, so I guess the argument could be made to have fly/no fly apps in here or in general. Not both obviously. I just thought it more related to legalities so posted it here. It's a brand new section so let's see how it evolves.  :)

If you look down at the thread titles you will see that the different countries are (afaik) clearly stated eg. UK, USA, Ireland, Russia, Denmark......so that should suffice. EASA gets a thread too because it is EU wide. Hopefully no confusion.

So you've already benefitted from knowing something about USA regulation and can wipe the smile off the nobs face.  ;D

If you really think about what I said you have the following problem.

Multiple threads on UK regulation
Multiple threads on US regulation
Multiple threads on EU regulation (maybe per country)

This is not just about the forum - it is also about the roads into the forum, and therefore the roads in to the threads. Conducting a search on Google for a given term may result in them being directed to outdated information about FPV. The reader wastes their time before realising there is other information buried within the legalities forum or worse, leaves, thinking that the information they were presented is still current.

A far better solution long term is to have a long thread for each of the UK, the US and EU etc). That way the user can see (even if the Google search brings them to page 17) that they are on page X of 96 - a quick click to Page 96 and they have the most current information on UK legalities.

If they're searching for a specific issue, they can use the search box which will pop up the most relevant posts within that thread in reverse chronological order meaning the current data relevant to their search is always at the top of their results. Hey presto, they are reading relevant data and a moderator does not have to worry about archiving old threads.
