Hi everyone
I'm new and in the middle of a falcon Venturi Evo 2 as my first build,
I was hoping someone can help me decide on battery, esc, motor and prop.
I have no idea how long the Venturi 2 can fly for and what's speeds can be expected depending on set up.
Hope someone can help me with this😀
I think Rob's out of the 4S power setups, which is a shame as they're a good combo, an O.S. 1200kv motor and EnerG Pro ESC. That's good for a 100MPH setup.
Another option to the O.S. 1200kv is the E-Flite Power 25 BL, 1250KV motor, which is a good efficient motor for the Vent.
Both of those motors will give you 30-45 minutes flight time on a pair of Multistar 5200 4S batteries depending on how fast you fly.
Thanks for your reply,
This is all quite new to me, I'm really suprised I could get 100mph!
As I will be learning I was looking for more flight time and perhaps less speed to start with, I have looked at the turnigy motors, are they any good?

Yeah, the SK3 3542 1250Kv is OK, I ran one on a Vent for a while and it was OK for the money, but not great. I now run a Scorpion SII 1190Kv and that rocks.
Yup 100 mph straight into a goalpost!
Any 4s setup, 500-800W 1100-1400kv would be a good start.
Just keep the weight super low for the maiden and set up dual rates so she survives the launch.
If you load her up with battery a failed launch could smash her up badly!
I really hope I don't crash badly on the maiden!
That's good advice running with 1 battery to start and then perhaps adding another when I hopefully get confident, so is it best to go with 4s from the start and forget the 3s system?

No, you just need to build it properly and give it a good confident launch. The battery is critical to the CG, so you need to maiden it like you intend to fly it, if you miss out a battery for the maiden or any other weight from the front then you're going to make it tail heavy which is going to fail in a bad way.

as I peel says- you must have it balancing correctly. but the lighter it is whilst balanced correctly- the easier the launch will be. you may find it balances with one battery right up front- or two batteries further back, for example.
Yes I've got you, I will make a balancing jig to check this before first flight, ok so what would you buy if you were me from your experienced knowledge.

If you have no existing kit I would buy the 4s power system from flying wings and some zippy compact 25c 4s batteries. perhaps 3000 or 4000 mah.
but if you're as new and inexperienced as you sound :) I would also buy a flying wings Falcon including the power system- or perhaps a hobby king tek sump and suitable power system- and fly that first so you get more experience of flying a wing. the venturi is quite big and not massively strong so you want to be comfortable with a cheaper lighter smaller wing setup first.
Definitely go straight to 4S. There is no advantage in starting out in 3S.
I believe having more power makes a model easier to fly. Launches aren't as hard and you can climb quickly when you need to.

Very true. And I always launch on full throttle too. Unless someone has some crazy motor setup and a tiny wingspan (a 6s mental speed skyfun/funjet for example)- where the torque will crash the plane- full throttle launches are so much easier imo.
POWERRRRRRR in the excellent words of Jeremy Clarkson.
Thanks guys for your input, I will go with the 4s system from flying wings and get some 4s batteries, my servos have now turned up so I can fit them and attempt to laminate the wings! Getting there gradually.

another 3 tips would be
launch it without throttle into long grass. a very hard javelin throw by a friend is ideal. how does it glide? if the seems to glide ok- and land fairly flat- that's a good sign. if it noses like crazy it may be nose heavy.
have a friend launch it to begin with. that way you can concentrate on the controls.
final is, if possible, launch it from the top of a slight hill/incline. that way if it takes a bit of power to get up to speed and it loses a little hight it's less of an issue.
and fly with as light a battery as possible whilst still having the CG slightly nose heavy!!
Great I will take all the advice onboard, it will be a nervous launch but I will get the hang of it I'm sure, then one day have an fpv set up, that looks great flying the wing from a goggle view!

You have flown RC planes/quads before though.......haven't you?
Hi Dazza,
I was a bit nervous about launching my venturi evo but all went well. As said already, just give it plenty of throttle and a bold chuck. I did mine ritewing style, but one thing I did find, it would have been useful to have a finger hole or a stuck on bit of something to push against on the underside. I find the plane slips from my grip mid-launch, but still always gets away ok.
It's a bit tricky at this time of year but if you can launch over vegetation or long grass that may help if things go wrong..... but I'm sure it will all go ok ! :D
ps.... Also, set a bit of positive reflex on both elevons.

A long time ago but got to start somewhere lol
I've been tempted to get back into it when a good friend recently built a zagi and then smashed it on his maiden😂

Start with an easier plane. A bixler, easy star or axn floater jet.
Your Venturi will be heavy, fast and intimidating. You will crash it plenty of times and it doesn't repair particularly easily.
By the time you're ready to get the most out of the Venturi- it will be so smashed up and not flying that well you will have to buy another!

Sound advice, my first plane was a Tek Sumo, which crashed on the first couple of launches. Then moved onto an EVO and now building a Vent II.
Build a crappy wing like a Tek Sumo to test out your gear / get a feel for a wing first.
I launch my wing like in this video. Pretty easy really and it keeps your hand clear of the blender on the back. If you can do it left handed you can fly it out of your hand.
Warning: turn the sound down as the music is awful in this vid!

I'm guessing a Venturi might be a bit heavy for my wing tip frisby method I use on my Falcon EVO :P :
I wouldn't try a glide test with a fully loaded Vent. You won't be able to throw it hard enough, it will stall.
Beat me to it Brucey!
To be honest, if your CG of correct, your control surfaces move the correct way it will fly...
Give it some throttle and throw it, you will be fine its mostly foam it will bouce(ish) ;D
Yeah, make sure the elevons are set evenly, add a bit of up. Make sure it's balanced on its cg and left/right.
Thanks for all your advice, I will continue to build the Venturi 2 and also buy an easier to fly aircraft to get me back in, what would be a good radio and receiver set up, I was thinking of the spectrum 6 which a friend has but still not sure?

The Taranis. It's boring because pretty much everyone else has one, but there's a reason why; it's so versatile and bang for buck there's no radio to match it.
The Taranis, thanks will take a look, is there a specific model you would recommend?
The Taranis plus x9d I take it, looks like it comes with a battery and receiver so that's good.
Yes, that's one one, the X9D plus.
FrSky are releasing the Horus soon, I personally am not that interested in it but it will make eBay awash with second hand Taranis, whatever the plural for them is.
Lol I'm sure there will be many taranis's on eBay, got to finish my build first so will keep an eye on it.
Hi guys, I've been a bit quiet for a while whilst finishing the build and I'm nearly there, just the elevons to attach and servo linkages to fit, now I'm ready to order the motor, prop, esc and batteries.
You have all been helpful in offering your input which has helped me a lot and thanks for that, I'm thinking of getting this motor bearing in mind my lack of flying over the last few years
SK3 3542 1250Kv (for duration and less power than an os)
I still need help deciding on a suitable prop, an esc maybe jp 60amp or perhaps a turnigy equivalent and batteries, I was thinking of a pair of zippy 25c 4s 3300's or if there is a better battery that you may suggest?
Your help will be much appreciated
Darren
The Zippy's are good, Brucey flies with them and they balance up really well, alternatively the Turnigy 3300 nanos are very similar.
There's also the 4S 4000 Multistars that are similar weight-wise but you have to get used to the sag on them which is a bit un-nerving on long distance flights. If it's your first time back in the seat then you may be best sticking with predictable Zippy or Nano-tech batteries.
On the SK3 I ran an APC-E 9x6 prop which matches up really well.
Thanks ipeel,
I will go with the zippy's and also look for that apc prop, what esc will match well with the sk3?
I have no fpv gear for this wing but will definitely be building that into my next wing once I'm confident!
If there is anything else you think I may need on this one then please let me know.
Darren
You're right with the SJ 60 amp, that'll pair nicely with the SK3.

Hmmm that sk3 looks pretty good but they weren't in stock when I was shopping a few months back. I got the ntm 3542 1250kv which is only rated to 600W on 4s. That 9x6 would overpower the motor so I'm on 8x6. Or I could just give it a go... What's the worst that could happen?!

Just looking to order my motor and lipo batteries today from hobby King but I've seen a lot of negative reviews, has anyone had any good or bad experiences?
Also it looks like the items I want to order are only available from their international seller and I was a little concerned by import tax.
I decided to order the sports/Evo set up from rob at flying wings, also ordered a couple of 4s 3300 batteries from him although it doesn't mention what Brand they are I'm sure they will be ok.
