I'd like to make a bit more of an effort this year regarding the videos I publish on youtube... I'm not trying to make a living from it, I just enjoy the process of making a video... from the actual content down to editing and finding appropriate music etc...
Thing is, I'm really starting to get BORED of my own videos... for every video on my youtube channel, there are at least 5 or 6 others that I've made but they're all just so similar I don't bother uploading them.
So what kind of things do you like seeing in videos? I know you can't please everyone, but a general consensus as to what makes a good video would be a good start... not just for me, but for all of us on here that like making videos and sharing the hobby we enjoy so much.
How long is too long? How long is too short? LOL. At what point do you become bored?
pure flying videos? Talking/Narration? A mixture of both?
HD footage or OSD footage?
Are people interested in seeing the real life person behind the forum username?
Tutorials? (not that I'm an expert in anything) Airframe walkthroughs and setups?
Let me know your thoughts, and together we can all take on board the suggestions and perhaps make some nice videos :)

haha, it might not even be a bad idea.... I was genuinely thinking about getting one of those cheap PNF miniquads from banggood and do a sort of vlog from the point of view of someone who hates them lol

Nice thread. A shot of the airframe is always good, maybe briefly pointing out anything unusual. But don't go into the length of you dipoles and whatnot, that's all a little dull for me! Narration is a personal choice, but not many people are any good at it!

I think I might try this at some point. If I do it will be narration recorded "live" so to speak... so my reactions and comments as they happen, rather than post production.
Just a quick view of the airframe and its spec. Stick it on the end if you want so it doesn't get in the way of the movie. I guess some people are trying to document their fpv experience, others are trying to create an audiovisual work of art... Horses for courses really but if it's interesting it will be viewed.
As a side note, is there anyway of telling what YouTube restrictions will be for a particular music track? Been nobbled by that a few times and it's annoying!

It's been really hit n miss for me lately. Some tracks don't even get flagged, others either mute the audio completely or make the video unavailable in certain countries.
Lately I've been scouring the No Copyright Music youtube channels to find music that I like, that sounds decent (not like the built in youtube cheesy tracks), that allows the video to be monetized.
on my old channel, I made £60 in a whole year lol.... granted that's not a lot, but when you realise it's in your adsense account after forgetting about setting it up last year, it's a nice surprise... pays for some RC goodies anyway :)

Search your track name and see what restrictions are in place. If it doesn't appear at all its not in their database.
Narration. Nothing holds my attention more than someone describing what they're doing, what they're thinking, how the plane is doing, planning the approach to home, winds etc.
It's like going flying with someone.
I couldn't care less if it's in HD either, I like seeing the OSD. A bit of panning around doesn't do any harm either :)
I don't really care for music - if I wanted music, I'd just mute the video and listen to something.
Also, I like "missions" like... "let's take a trip to the bridge 3km away" as long as you're not actually Ali Shan Mao I'll watch that.
And let's not forget crashing but that might be a bit expensive to do consistently :D
I agree Steve... the HD stuff might be nice for those artistic shots and maybe some action shots too. but I really like watching the technical stuff on a person's OSD, seeing how their plane performs etc.
I do like a bit of picture in picture, but the only software I have that can do that isn't exactly kosher, plus it's too complicated for my feeble brain to master.
Crashing.... everyone loves a good crash, we're sadistic buggers lol
I like a mix of stuff - both in terms of making videos and watching them. Its always very subjective of course, but a rule of thumb -
To watch a pure music and HD flight footage, it has to be pretty compulsive viewing and/or not be too long. Because I have a pretty low attention span, I tend to think other people will as well, and so try and cut mine down
If I ever watch any of my own flights back, I watch the DVR recording - mainly because my DVR records the audio on the ground and I often mutter along to myself and it helps me know whats going on, if others are there it can pick up some unintentional hilarities. Again, because I like that better, I tend to think other people might as well - and so try to include it if I have it
I like the mission/challenges as well (good suggestion Steve). I always have a string of little ideas ready, so if ever the circumstances present themselves I can try one
Reviews/Builds - I like these too. I do like to know why someone has chosen whatever, and why they are putting the stuff in. It can get a bit factual sometimes though, I like to hear about people if they are unsure of things, and what they are going to try etc... if that makes sense.
Mainly I think you ought to make a video that you'd like to see. If you are bored of your own stuff, then try and think of something that would make it better, and put a bit of effort into the s/w if that's what's needed. I moved over to Final Cut Pro X just so I could control more than 1 picture in picture thing. Worth the effort of learning new s/w in the end
Picture in picture? Crashes? Technical stuff on the OSD? Missions? (achieve 100mph, I hit 90 then it went wrong) - you'll love this. Won't work on a mobile device though because of the aforementioned copyright problem!

You'll never hear me narrating though, I just can't imagine anyone could be interested! I find some of those team legit videos a bit narcissistic where he films and talks about literally everything. Rotor riot is the same, it's actually good content but they are constantly wandering around camera in hand!

I have a very short attention span. Anything to keep me engaged.
Take off and landing is always nice. Sets the scene so to speak.
Narration is good for the slower flights. Live narration is best.
Lots of variation in the scenes. If you flew 4 flights- cut it down to a few mins of interesting stuff.
Fly in more places and fly lower/faster etc
Music helps. Especially if it's in line with the tone of the flight.
There were a few videos I liked of BMSWeb (I think) flight texting the Bixler, FPVRaptor and FX-79 a while ago - the FX-79 one I enjoyed because he was flying low and slow around the villages nearby, and obviously being in Australia, the lighting was lovely. He was narrating at the time as well which sealed the deal for me.
Flyboysee did some outstanding narrations a while back, especially the one where e got lost in the clouds and the one where you guys got him to 10km and in both cases he was obviously clenching. The audio added a whole new dimension to the flights.

I like to see a bit of scene being set, like having ground footage of the launch and maybe some flybys etc. I usually just mute the videos to be honest and I'm getting fed up trying to find royalty free music. But http://freemusicarchive.org/ (http://freemusicarchive.org/) is pretty good for that and normally just requires you to put a credit in the video somewhere for what you have chosen.
Overviews are nice, but they have to be well done and planned. Too much faffing and err's and umm's puts me off. As do lengthy descriptions of things that don't really matter. Just get the detail across.
I say all this but I rarely spend the time to properly set up a camera on the ground, or plan out an overview or anything. It's something I'd love to do but I rarely get enough time so just fly instead.
I also am sick to the back teeth of miniquad videos set to screaming dubstep soundtracks. They were interesting for about a minute to see what these things are capable of, but 6 minute long videos of rapid changes of directions and flips/rolls? No thanks.
I feel like I have uploaded a mixture of videos, and by a very long way, my most popular video is my Long range narrated Skywalker video with over 20,000 views and over 500 likes in just 4 months.
Personally, I like picture in picture, love seeing the nice footage but also analysing what quality of signal the pilot had and how the plane is performing etc (I think this is reflected in my vids as I have a few picture in picture). I also like to see a few different in flight camera angles if possible.
Like someone already mentioned, I also like to see a picture of the aircraft so I know how it looks, where components are placed, and also I like the description to include the entire setup spec.
Final Cut X is also my editing software, after watching a few tutorials on Youtube its all good! If anyone would like a copy of this for Mac let me know ;) ;)
Agree on the miniquads. I've unsubscribed a bunch of people who I used to enjoy watching, but now it's all the same stuff over and over again and my brain can't keep up tbh lol

Youre not the only ones, I love mini quads and racing, but even I am bored of the same videos over and over.
Freestyle is mind numbing as its just flip flip flip. Speeding up and down a field is just as boring. Watching an actual close race is fun for a few laps.
I am equally bored of watching long range HD plane footage tho, unless its in some beautiful place with amazing scenery, it is all the same. (dive bombing ladies aside :P )
Their needs to be something new and innovative for me to watch a long flight video. I find informative, reviews and tech videos more interesting atm.

Also, I really like:
-low flying videos
-Edited videos where it changes scene every few seconds rather than the same clip for 1 minute at a time (This doesn't always apply though)
I enjoy most videos even if I rarely watch all of them. Personally I just make videos for me and if someone else wants to watch them then that's cool but I'm really not fussed either way. I just like to have a record of my flying set to some music that I happen to like, totally self-indulgent.
It looks like the content is key, regardless of what airframe. I know what you mean about 250 videos but what makes the difference with the good ones is that they are interesting while still demonstrating skill. Some of charpu's latest vids are actually a bit dull wheras skitzo is on another level for me (this was bloody brilliant https://youtu.be/lzBEA2UFzR8 ).
For fixed wing, low flying and interesting 3D environments, even if it's just a river or following a track. I find long range a bit dull though. 10k might feel a long way for an rc plane but because of the height needed it just looks like a slow, boring full size flight to me - sorry if that's your bag but it's just my opinion. It's also a bit illegal 🤐😇!
I suppose it all depends what sparks your interest in fpv in the first place. Ironically, I have no interest in rc modelling (as in scale etc) and I'm not looking for the feeling of flight as I get that in my day job. It's all about the interplay between sky and ground for me, so ultimately that's what I like to see in a good vid.

Some really good comments here guys. hopefully, we can all apply some of these ideas to our next wave of videos.
I get bored watching long range videos, but I like flying long range missions myself.
Low down, terrain hugging flying does it for me, especially when the flying is in really cool places like mountains or cliffs.
There's a guy on youtube (he might be on here actually) who flies around the town I was born in - gutted! It looks fantastic from the air, and if I hadn't moved down here it'd be my playground. D'oh!
My intention is to make a "day in the life" type of video... showing my whole process of prepping the gear, chucking it in the car, driving to the flying spot... pre-flight stuff, a few equipment walkarounds (airframes, groundstations, support equipment), flying (although not a lot of flying footage, mostly ground footage) packing up, going home and editing videos.
I'll try really hard to NOT make it too long and/or boring... I'll accompany it with another video containing that day's flying footage, both HD and DVR

Haha! My FPV day involves looking after the kids/going to work/doing house stuff and if I notice a possible break in the weather, a quick battery charge and explaining to the missus I'll be 'back in half an hour'! When I get to the field it's goggles on and airborne! I just don't have time for any more than that! So, I could make a similar movie, but it'll probably have more snotty kids and nappies than the average FPV vid!
