Title: Preferred multiway connectors
Post by: Toenee on July 26, 2016, 01:22:15 PM
Is there a preferred multiway connector to use to allow a conection between a wing mounted vtx or uhf-rx and the fuselage? Also a recommended supplier.

I use Molex SL series connectors like this 9-way female one  (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/pcb-connector-housings/6795981/?searchTerm=6795981&relevancy-data=636F3D3126696E3D4931384E525353746F636B4E756D6265724D504E266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C26706D3D5E5C647B367D247C5E5C647B377D247C5E5C647B31307D2426706F3D313426736E3D592673743D52535F53544F434B5F4E554D4245522677633D4E4F4E45267573743D36373935393831267374613D3637393539383126) (and its matching male connector (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/pcb-connector-housings/6795934/?searchTerm=6795934&relevancy-data=636F3D3126696E3D4931384E525353746F636B4E756D6265724D504E266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C26706D3D5E5C647B367D247C5E5C647B377D247C5E5C647B31307D2426706F3D313426736E3D592673743D52535F53544F434B5F4E554D4245522677633D4E4F4E45267573743D36373935393334267374613D3637393539333426)). I love the positive latch for extra security. You will also need this (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/pcb-connector-contacts/6794751/?searchTerm=6794751&relevancy-data=636F3D3126696E3D4931384E525353746F636B4E756D6265724D504E266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C26706D3D5E5C647B367D247C5E5C647B377D247C5E5C647B31307D2426706F3D313426736E3D592673743D52535F53544F434B5F4E554D4245522677633D4E4F4E45267573743D36373934373531267374613D3637393437353126) and this (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/pcb-connector-contacts/6706262/?searchTerm=6706262&relevancy-data=636F3D3126696E3D4931384E525353746F636B4E756D6265724D504E266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C26706D3D5E5C647B367D247C5E5C647B377D247C5E5C647B31307D2426706F3D313426736E3D592673743D52535F53544F434B5F4E554D4245522677633D4E4F4E45267573743D36373036323632267374613D3637303632363226) . This is the same kind of connectors ImmersionRC uses on their VTx. I've used MPX in the past but now tend to prefer these.

Cheers

It's a shame with RS's order quantities, it makes it quite expensive when you only need 2. I have ordered the multiplex connectors and will see how they go.
Thanks

You can buy Molex individual housings and small quantities of pins at Mouser Electronics.

I vouch for the molex stuff but it is more expensive; it works out to ~28p per connection (inc. connectors, free shipping) vs ~6p per connection (ex shipping) for a hobbyking JST-SH plug set.

I usually end up using 2 or 3 of these per plane; the crimping tool is the same.
