I do surveys at work using an inspire 1 pro.
Looking to expand the things we can do I gave pix4d a go today.
The flight was done using poi on the dji go app leaving me free to take the photos
149 photos like this one.

Next to try photoscan...

The video does your efforts better justice i think. Did you get it cleaned up any better in the end Steve?
I doubt if Photoscan will yield any better results tbh. I tried photoscan first and Pix4d second.... clearly the pricetag for a commercial user for pix4d is a tad steep lol...
Have you got photoscan??
Have you tried Autodesk's offering 123D Catch?
I've used it on small stuff and it works rather nicely, will get round to a larger project like this one day but need to get my 550 stable enough first :+
A structure that's mostly see-through must be inherently difficult for it I guess but that's still impressive.
I got I cleaned up quite nicely it is a bit laborious to clean the file but the result looks good. I'll render a fly through and post it up later...

Oh and 123d catch only let's you use 75 pictures. Also tried it with drone deploy and the result looked like a dog chew.

I've never needed to use 75 so didn't realise its limit. Wont be using that for my larger project then ;)
Nice work Steve, looks pretty good considering its not a solid type structure. These 3d modelling softwares really struggle with that sort of thing.
Sometimes making a mask around the object you want can help, but is very very time consuming. Another option is to look at the processing settings. Pix4d tends to reduce the quality a fair bit by having image res etc. This makes processing faster but can make the results less accurate.
Cheers, I was playing about with it in a meeting today and got the cloud of random crap to go away but I got a bit carried away and deleted some of the structure too. I'll get it sorted soon. You are right about the time consuming but it took hours to render then another 5 hours of editing the model. If you are making a map then drone deploy is much faster and you can use your computer while it is rendering as it is cloud based. Pix4d makes my laptop unusable while it is on stage 3...
Need to get work to provide a better computer!

Yeah it really can take a very long time to process. Luckily I've got a pretty capable computer so processing is normally pretty quick.
Can't remember if it's possible with pix4d, but with agisoft it's possible to highlight points created by individual pictures. It may be that the skewed pixels you had we caused maybe by one or two pics, in which case you can just omit them. I would think the lens on your inspire if fairly good, but sometimes you get these artefacts when the software uses the data from tge very edge of the image where there may be a little distortion.
If you would like me to run the images on agisoft, let me know.
I would be really interested in seeing the results from agisoft. If you are up for it I'll stick the photos on google drive and pm you a link? It won't be that quick as I am out doing line of sight surveys with the inspire today😎

Yeah I'm happy to give it a go, it's always interesting to process different things.
It will probably take a few days depending on how busy I am. Just send me the link when you can and I'll upload the results once it's done. I'll take a few screenshots during the process so you can see how it goes on agisoft.
Here is a link to the zip file.

thanks for offering to do this I am keen to see if it looks easier than Pix4d.
Cheers
Steve
No problem Steve. Hopefully should have something for you in a few days.
With the software, pix4d is easier to use (pretty much just clicking next for the bulk of the processing) whereas agisoft needs a bit more thought before starting each process. Having said that, it's not too complicated, so once you know which settings work well for you/computer it's fairly straight forward.
I've not tried editing point clouds on pix4d but with agisoft it's pretty easy, albeit tedious.
pix4d is similar sounding, you click on each photo and carve out the parts you dont want.
takes a long time but it isn't hard, the problem is you need to zoom right in because the selection tool is a bit cavalier at low zoom levels. my first attempt deleted all the antennas from the tower!
/Steve
Yeah it's easily done deleting the wrong stuff. Will be interesting to see how agisoft deals with this radio tower.
I've done a first pass with the tower. Have to say the results from pix4d look quite a bit better. Photos can seems to really struggle with the thin bars and just trys to make a solid object out of it.

That is still pretty good though far better than drone deploy!
I'd be interested to see if you can animate a fly through and what that looks like.... thanks it looks really positive.

Photoscan has no fly through option, but I could either record a short video like you did or maybe create a mesh and pop it on sketchfab.
Which ever is easiest for you.
Thanks again!

Hi Steve, sorry I've not got round to it yet, had a busy weekend. Should hopefully have time this week to finish it!
no worries.
I had a play with pix4d again this morning and re did it over the weekend while my pc wasnt doing anything.
here is the result.

still not perfect but really good for a first go at using the editing features.
it still needs some cleaning up but it is really easy to delete too much and lose a part of the structure (you may notice a few things hovering in space...
cheers
Steve
