I've been messing around the last few weeks with some program Planitarium called space engine its also free, wont cost you anything.
Its pretty stunning and informative based on real data and computer generated planets of the universe with procerdural textures and there is thousands of them.
Its also time generated animation and great for some stunning still images.

Believe it or not its a one man gang producing this software not a team of coders. I think when the goals for windows is done then the mac version will be done.
It works for VR if you have the hardware, Ive been using 3d vision and its pretty stunning given Nvidia 3d vision is old tech.
