Title: Alternative glue?
Post by: SnoozeDoggyDog on November 19, 2016, 03:10:24 PM
Hi
I'll be gluing my MT halves together in the next few days. I have a hot glue gun but the glue will be set before I get it all on and the other half offered up. I don't want to use that foaming gorilla glue. BnQ don't sell uhu por. Is there something I can get my hands sharpish on that's in favour with you lot?

Cheers
P

B&Q don't sell POR but they do sell (At least in my branch) other contact adhesives which will work. Though some formulas are not usable on some types of foam. So you should test on a scrap bit first.

Bostik and Evostick have some contact adhesives which are identical to UHU. (Bostik general purpose for example)

Cheers. I'm in BnQ now. So any foam safe contact adhesive should do. Great. Thank you.

I prefer to use epoxy for that sort of thing.  Not keen on contact adhesive where you want to spend a bit of time getting things lined up etc.

I've put a hold on my hornet build because I've run out of UHU Por... I bought some of ebay yesterday and I'm being a good patient boy by waiting for it to arrive before gluing owt together ;)

Oh, epoxy I've already got! Cheers

Personal choice of course, but for gluing foam plane halves together I prefer to use something that has some give. I find epoxy to be too brittle. UHU Por is ideal as it doesn't dry/cure into a solid, but more like rubber.

Then just don't let it fully dry and put enough on so that you have some wiggle room so that only when you squeeze the bits together that it will really grab tight. Put every single airframe together with contact. It's all in the technique.

Epoxy is too brittle imo. It tends to break over time.

Can't say I've ever seen that happen. I've got foamies over a decade old held together with epoxy. Balsa models three times older than that with the firewalls glued on with it too.  Most epoxies don't go rock hard and brittle.
