I was intrigued to find an article today on a company offering counter drone services. Offering to protect an event or location from illegal drone use by planning, risk assessment and an applied course of action should the event be intruded upon.
What struck me the most was the offer of initiating the UAVs RTH mechanism remotely :o
I find this claim absurd..... 'drone jacking'.. really!
Thoughts?
Well all you would need to do in most cases is somehow jam the control signal. It doesn't seem beyond the bounds of possibility.
We had a few postings about this kind of thing a while back. Here's a couple.

This could be a legal minefield if the jamming itself causes a crash resulting in injury or damage. More lawyer fodder I expect.
Yea it assumes RTH is the failsafe..
It's illegal to jam anyway, so yeah minefield!

They can't hijack the on board systems like one could a computer. All they do is block the control signal and assume the drone's default action is to RTH.
This to me shows complete ignorance of the very things they're purporting to be able to protect you from.
If I were a terrorist and wanted to deliver something nasty by using a drone, I certainly wouldn't want the damn thing to fly back to me would I? Sort of like a dead-man's switch where if it's interfered with it will drop to the ground and... well you can guess the rest.
Utter utter ignorance and scaremongery for the sole purpose of trying to make a few quid off people's fears.
I assumed they weren't talking about terrorist attacks so much as paparazzis and other nosey types with Phantoms etc. In which case it all seems quite feasible.
....and hammer yet another nail into the hobbyists coffin..
Clearly you're on the same thoughts as me:
1. Knocking out the control link is rediculous - who then becomes culpable.
2. The assumption that the UAS has a RTH feature let alone figure out what it's operating on - 400mhz to 5.8 is a big band to f*** with!
3. GPS Jamming isn't an option. Again it renders the UAS 'unsafe'
I just hate these people that talk utter Sh**e. I offered them to come and 'RTH' my kit... no reply! :P

The Company offers protection against illegal drone flyers - i quizzed what constitutes an 'illegal flyer'. Apart from the obvious breaches of the CAA who are you to stop a recreational flyer whos playing within the rules.........
again no comment!
