Title: Am I missing anything? - First FPV build onto a Wot4 Foamy
Post by: danbt on March 28, 2017, 11:51:33 AM
Hi guys,

My father in law has kindly given me a Wot4 Foamy as my first fixed wing model. I have flown helicopters exclusively previously.

Jumping into fixed wing is for the purpose of trying to do some long-range FPV as an end goal.

So, here is a list of things I have just ordered. Would be great if you guys could sanity check and let me know if theres anything I've missed.

- Wot 4 Foamy RTF (already owned)
- Spektrum DX6i (already owned)
- Turnigy Blue 2200mah Flight pack x3 (will use one for goggles/dvr/vRX) (Already owned)
- Quanum V2 Pro Goggles from HK
- 5.8ghz 25-600mw Video TX from Banggood
- Quanum 5.8ghz Auto-scan Video RX from HK
- Runcam Swift 2 2.3mm from Banggood
- SD DVR from HK
- 5.8ghz SMA cloverleaf antennas (1 for TX 1 for RX)
- LC Power Filter
- Bunch of JST connector pairs
- Bunch of 3S balance leads (using JST to make a connector to power FPV gear from flight pack)
- Heatshrink Kit
- Solder

Planning to use this 5.8GHz Video setup for first foray into FPV at close range. I'll then repurpose this gear to use it as a 5.8ghz relay from a 1.3ghz video system, where I also plan to use a 900mhz UHF control system on a Taranis as opposed to the 2.4ghz Spektrum.

How is it looking? All tips and CC welcome!
Cheers all
Dan

All good.  The only things I would mention (and much is personal preference) is this -

2.3mm lens is quite a wide angle, it's getting popular in little quads where such a wide angle can be useful close up, but in planes I've been happy with a 2.8mm lens... or there's a 2.5mm lens if you want to be "mid-wide"

LC-Power filter - It's nice to get the cleanest signal you can, but you *shouldn't* need it on that build... although it can very much depend on the noisiness of your ESC

3s balance leads.  I've seen lots of these come unattached during a flight - my preference is to solder on some jst leads/sockets to the XT60 at the same time I'm soldering it to the ESC.  There are much harder to pull apart, and so less prone to falling apart

Thanks for the info. Do you know if it's possible to change lenses? I don't really want to have to ship the camera back to china!

Yep - they are on a screw thread (it's how you focus them as well - so don't play with it).  It might be that you get the 2.3mm and like the view in which case yay, don't worry.  If not you can just pick up an alternate lens and swap it over

I have run my Wot4 with fpv a couple of times. The first time was a bit of a disaster and a new Wot4 was ordered.... It's a different type of flying to my quads and Hornet, faster and the bloody prop is in the way. But it is a laugh for an odd fly.

Do you have somewhere in mind to fly? There isn't much grass to fly over in Brum... :(

Hey Mike, sounds like a laugh. And Erm, I'm a member of a club in Meriden near Solihull. Heart of England aeromodellers. We have a decent field there but no one fpv's currently.

I'm in South Birmingham. Where abouts do you fly?

I think everyone is over awed by there first FPV flight...
Mine was a disaster in the making  :o

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGp5dEgg1S8#)

I made the classic mistake of thinking I knew what it would be like up there in the blue sky
Not only that but it was a maiden flight TOO !
Simple I thought... Trim it and put on the goggles and fly it like I Own the Sky  ;)
it does come back to bite you if you don't know what can go wrong,
I made the classic mistake of thinking my ability was way above my experience
it get so much better each and every flight

I've just drawn up a wiring diagram for my setup.

Could you guys sanity check please?

Cheers

It will never work, your vtx will burn out with no antenna on :)

Motors use 3 wires not 2 ;)

Joking aside :

Electronically its sound, but ditch all the JST's because it's a collection of unnecessary failure points.

It's not clear but the connection to the camera looks a bit wrong to me.  The yellow should go to the yellow and the red to the red.

Yeah I think he's got his colors and labels mixed up a bit. The correct colours go to the correct labels but in between the two connectors is wrong.

Hi guys.

The pin outs for the components are from the components I have.

The reason for the twist in the last Servo wire between vtx and camera is because the order of pins is different.
