Title: Foam board Spectre 40"
Post by: iwan_canobi on April 12, 2017, 02:33:48 PM
I've started building a VAS Spectre using foam board, following the guide here -

https://flitetest.com/articles/40-swappable-specter-an-ibcrazy-design (https://flitetest.com/articles/40-swappable-specter-an-ibcrazy-design)

It looks like a nice little plane and should be good for some low level blasting around.

I've built the wings and tail so far and have laminated them for strength, and I've printed a motor mount so the fuse will be next. Question I have is which motor to use? I'll be running 4S, and I have a 40A ESC. Originally I was going to use a mini quad motor but the plane is a little bigger than I though so I think that will be underpowered and not in any way efficient.

I'd like to source from the UK and avoid hobbyking if possible, but I'm not finding a lot of inspiration.

Currently I like the look of this emax -

https://www.robotbirds.co.uk/default/motors/emax-motors/emax-gt-series.html (https://www.robotbirds.co.uk/default/motors/emax-motors/emax-gt-series.html)

It's 1100kV, even though it states it's only good for 3S that is using an 11" prop, so I'm thinking it would be fine on 4S with a 9x5 prop, sound reasonable? Just wondering if the rotation speed would be an issue...

Anyone got any other recommendations for a medium size motor in the range of 1100-1800kV, 4S and 9 or 8" prop and in the UK?

Coming along nicely, just got the fuse to build and motor to order once I've decided which one to go for...

I'm just talking to myself here but might as well keep going! :P

Made some more progress, printed a motor mount and made up the fuse:

I also started work on designing a camera mount nose for the Runcam 2. Followed the same process as the one I made for my Z3, and came up with this -

It's printing just now so will see how it turns out, probably need to try and reduce the weight a bit but will see.

Looks really good, hope it flies as well as they normally do.

Cheers Steve, is coming on now. The nose 3D print came out quite well, but at 45g it's just a bit too much weight so having to re-think that one. The motor arrived, went for a 1550kV TBS motor, it's meant for endurance quads but will swing a 7" prop on 4S so should have ~1.2kg thrust, so if I can keep the weight down it should have a good turn of speed! :D

Thats looking good!

I recommend depron for construction with packing tape (look up Ed of Experimental Airlines on rcgroups / youtube ) which works really well for scratchbuilds like this. I think its lighter than the UK foamboard as well  ;)

don't forget to video the maiden! Good luck!

Well,  finished! Motor arrived on Tuesday and I got everything soldered up. Gave up eventually on the 3D printed nose as it was too heavy, so just went with a little mount for the runcam inside the fuse and a hole in some foam at the front! Nowhere near as pretty but should be functional!

The Rx is an X4R which I've stuck to the underside of the wing inside the fuse, and the ESC is on the outside at the back so there is plenty of room inside for the battery! I can easily fit the 3000mah 4S in and it seems to balance ok, but not sure if it's a bit heavy. It's 630g without battery so 960g with. I should have about 1.2kg thrust so it should be ok, but I've got some 1800 or 2200 4S batteries as well so will just see what works best!

I've made the wings removable as well, just for ease of modding things and also should help reduce the stress in the event of an inevitable crash!

Might maiden it tomorrow if the rain stays off!
