I've had this Split kicking around for a few weeks now, but was trying to get a good comparison video of the 2.1mm and 2.3mm lens on the RunCam Micro before I replaced it.
Having done the comparison video, I went ahead and tried the split out in my Martian III frame. This frame flies pretty smoothly, so I wasn't expecting any issues - but I, of course, got some

I'm not at all a fan of the camera so far as your FPV feed goes... but to be fair it was up in the air less than 30 seconds, so I don't want to jump the gun too much, but it was immediately noticeable. Jello wise, it could be down to that movement I had in the mount, but I'll have that sorted when I retest it and then see if I need a better mounting.
I didn't get a chance to test latency, but it's of a concern to people that fly fast and low... I'll look at that on the retesting. Oh, as a point of note, just to be different, I did pay for this myself, although RunCam gave me 30% off
Hi Wayne.....Looks like the Camera mounting screws have bottomed out maybe..?....Did you fit the washers, I mean it should be clamped solid to its mounting bracket..?
:vulture:
The SD mounting is shear stupidity IMO. Really poor design, realistically you are pretty much going to be forced to leave the SD card permanently mounted and access via USB only.
I think a further test should have been carried out before releasing this though to be honest, I don't think at this point it's a fair review.

It's a fair point. It's not a full review, but as I'm away for a week (hi from Orlando) and I didn't know how long it would take me to retest. I decided to release what I had and come back with a part 2 when I can
Cool look forward to seeing how it works out.
Enjoy your hols :)
I burnt out my pcb 😬 If anyone is gonna burn it out it's gonna be me
New board from runcam on its way, I also ordered the wifi module while I'm at it
Oh, now theres a thing, I have a dead Runcam 2, well, it still works but won't charge or connect to the PC any more. Do you think you can plug the Runcam 2 sensor module into the split PCB?
Too expensive and obviously to a good design.....I am glad I read these as I was tempted..... I wondered why Bignose13 hadn't been telling me how good it was....
School boy error mate, shorted out on a piece of mig wire
Super unlucky 😢
I thought I'd add a follow up to this initial review, just to see if I could alter that quad to make things smoother, and have the footage from the split I want.
The TL;DR version is, no I can't, not on that quad. To be fair, there seems to be a bit of judder coming from one or two of the motors - they certainly feel different from the others anyway. What really goes unnoticed in a CC Dturns into crap in a CMOS

I'll move it on to another quad... although there's no obvious contender yet.
Not had a chance to watch you video yet.
Did you have any freezing of the FPV feed?

No freezing, but occasionally I'd hit a breakup where the whole screen goes and comes back. It's maybe only like a quarter of a second, but it's noticeably different from the normal breakup
I've had the FPV feed totally freeze and only a reboot would bring it back. Need to try a faster SD card to see if that fixes it as the only way to make it reliable it not to record onboard.... kind of defeats the object 😂

I generally only use class 10 cards in everything. Fairly terrible if it locks up like your one and needs a manual reboot. Perhaps they fixed that in the Split version 2 (which of course is already available to preorder - but blink and they'll probably have the split 3 out as well)
Shame that's put me off the Slit for now, let's see if the Split 2 does any better.
Yeah it looks like they have addressed some of the issues with version 2, but only time will tell
Strange.
I put my split in a foamie plane, and have done about 40 flights, all perfect. All FPV feed and recording.
Zero FPV feed problems and perfect recordings onto a class 10 32G card.
Only issue I have seen is that sometimes it doesn't boot up when I plug the LIPo in, and I have to power cycle it.
Well I've just started to have a look at mine after a month of sitting on my desk, powered it up and it won't recognise my SD-card 90% of the time. :(
If you jiggle it and press it down it will recognise it for a bit, and then not again. I've tried lifting the pins slightly as recommended by Runcam themselves but it hasn't made any difference. My PC also doesn't recognise anything as being plugged in when it is recognising the card is there, so I think something more may be at play than the crappy socket. Have emailed HobbyRC to see what their returns policy is, but annoyingly as it's been sat here for a while I fear they may just tell me to go through Runcam for a replacement. :(
Runncam will want 3 million pictures of your split from every angle you can think of. They will then say ooh look the connecting cable is bent so that must be the issue!!!
So if you have to contact RunCam make sure your connecting cable is straight in the photos.
I assume you have tried different cards? Also I seem to remember that you have to be quite careful when placing the microsd in the holder. It has to go quite far back before the flap is lowered.
I have had very good customer service from HobbyRC, so fingers crossed they will be able to see you right.
Good Luck.
Yeah, I've had faulty RC2's and had to go through Runcam, they wanted videos etc which I guess is fair enough and give them their due they sent me a full replacement once I did this.
Hopefully they won't try and wiggle out of it though, I have zero confidence in this one and I know I'd be super annoyed if I got to the field and it refused to record!
Also had decent experience with HobbyRC as well though, so here's hoping!
So this video will probably be released on Monday (I try and spread videos out a bit else there's 3 come along all at once and then nothing for a week) but as I'm been grumbling away on shout about the split I thought I'd stick it up here first. I think I might be off RunCam Xmas card list on this one

I think the concept of having a HD recording camera which is also a great FPV camera is spot on, but for me, this just didn't do either - so it failed on both counts. RunCam still make (IMO) the best FPV cameras, so I hope they'll continue refining/redesigning things until they hit on something that fulfils the original idea of the split.
I've bought 2 - which I regret. To be honest Wayne, you've been very lucky to not suffer reliability issues as well. Both of mine have failed with different symptoms.
Hoping the split 2 is an improvement, but I won't be rushing to the front of the queue. I agree, Runcam rushed it to market and it has done their reputation no good at all in my opinion. I'm very wary of them as a company now.

I think it's pretty obvious the Runcam Split was always aimed at the Mini Quad market...It makes very little sense on a Fixed Wing of any kind IMO.
With that said, I think Runcam have really dropped the ball with the Split. A small Multi Rotor is a noisy environment to operate in at the best of times, and placing the PCB right in on the stack deep inside a Mini Quad, with no shielding?...really..?
Then there is the question of using the Camera for HD capture and for FPV..? I sometimes wonder if Run Cams development team have actually flown FPV at all, do you remember how we all had to turn on the WDR from stock?
I personally love Runcams products, they lead the way when it came to decent wiring looms and screws and accessories, no question. So much so, the competition had to follow suit or drown. Pleasing to see that happen TBH.
Im not sure they will ever sort it out. Some things are just a very bad idea, this is one of them, rather like using a GoPro or Box format Camera on any aircraft of any kind, why?
