Title: Winter FPV Meet - Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Post by: Flyboysee on September 30, 2012, 10:54:52 PM
So I thought to myself, "Where am I going to find a bunch of FPV pilots who are mad enough to brave the cold of winter and fly 'Caution to the Wind' despite the elements?" Then it just came to me as if by divine inspiration... Right here!

Right then, while the success of this weekend's FPV meet (29th September 2012 in Great Haseley) is fresh in our minds, I'd like to propose a winter meet up at the same venue sometime in the winter season. Naturally we will have the same facilities, as well as power points for heaters. Perhaps we should consider an entrance fee to cover the cost of renting the venue, as well as providing a cooked lunch, with soup, tea and coffee on tap all through the day. This should be around £20 a head.

I could set up an indoor video screen (projector) to view the live action indoors and with flights of 10 - 15 minutes I'm sure we'll all handle a small amount of exposure.

Let's start with a show of hands. Are you mad enough? Who's in?

Richard

If it were closer maybe :( Just if it's so cold and miserable that we need heaters and stuff, then the roads are probably going to be crap and I don't fancy sitting in a winter traffic jam....

Its around 2 hours to get to you and as long as the roads are clear then I'm game. Consider my hand raised.

As you were.... :)

Absolutely up for this one.  Video screen an excellent idea, being a passenger on a flight is one of the best things about these meets, and combining this with inside and heat is good

I think these would be a nightmare for FPV on landing, you're pretty much guaranteed a noseover on every landing .. plus they're balsa which is much less forgiving than foam.

Rather you than me mate, I prefer a plane for FPV that is very stable - after all, you don't see the airframe when flying through goggles.
Title: Re: Winter FPV Meet - Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Post by: Flyboysee on October 06, 2012, 07:54:56 PM
Nice ideas Dave, but I have to say anything that's a balsa type, or taildragger is going to be a killer. If you insist I would speak to Dizzy about this. I believe she's FPV'd or is about to, a Spitfire.

For me the best basic plane is something like an EZ, Bixler or AXN (though a bit small for me). I think the Twinstar IS still the best alternative to these. I'm still busy looking at mine - actually it's probably about an hour's work away from a maiden, but I'm having too much fun with the EZ to be arsed right now. Would you know, I actually bought a 2nd Twin 2nd hand from a BMFA geyser, apparently it's mint with a brushed set up, so looking forward to that.

Right, so you've had a set back. No problem, pick up the pieces and get back in the air asap. I assume all the FPV gear and electronics are alright still?

Dave if you'd like to set a weekend date for a re-maiden, I could do mine at the same time - up here or down there, I'm cool either way. Let me know.

Guys, all you gotta do is keep this thread alive - 'Build it and they will come!'

FYI this is the spot https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en) Enlarge the map and go down Rectory Road, it's the Playing Field with club house and tennis courts on it. If anyone who was there can do a Google Earth link that would be better.

Here are the vids from the last meet for those who weren't there - big fun!

Hi

OK, right so we need a date.

I was thinking one of two things. Either we wait for the snow to arrive which will make it completely mental and epic in terms of footage, though access may be a problem, or... (sucking thumb)

Saturday 1st December 2012

Good point, I'd say pay 48 hours before once we know we have a good weather window. That way we can cater for the right number of people and I'd rather people commit that way, than people decide on the day if they're not coming and we've over catered.

As with the meet we've just had, the facilities will be rented to us for £80 - £100 for the day. It has his and hers loos, a kitchen, and open plan seating area that we could use for eating, drinking, chilling and watching flights from the video stream on a big screen.

I will turn the big shower room into a hangar for plane set ups / repairs with tables and chairs (last time even with 7 flyers the main room got a bit cluttered with planes and gear) and power for charging etc.

We'll put on a brunch and afternoon lunch and have the biscuits, coffee, tea, hot choco and Gluhwein running all day.

We'll need two or three volunteers to each bring an electric heater to keep the club house warm.

A projector will be fantastic. I'll do the AV set up the day before and arrange a high mast for vrx's etc. Perhaps you'd like to stay over the night before? We'll host you!

Night before get together sounds awesome for those with day / night passes. The Haseley pub does a great dinner and has good beer / Scotch. My lounge is only so big, but chat to Krikey, he and his missus stayed at a place up the road that I believe was quite reasonable. I don't think it's wise to book far in advance in case the weather is crap. Good to see this thread and meet coming alive!

So, yeah to all who offered, all that is missing are some heaters - maybe three electric and a table top projector - white wall should be fine to project to. I'll do some tests of the 3g with phone on a mast so we can explore the option of going live on justin.tv or Youtube livestream. I may make friends with the adjacent house and ask if they'll let me run a cat5 for network for same.

No way you can get off for Saturday? Everyone has sick aunties you know :) We've made it a Saturday so if the weather goes bad there's always the option for the Sunday. If we set it Sunday, then we halve our chances of a fly good day.

Hi Everyone!

I have added a poll to the top of this page for you to confirm your attendance. Please to be sure to answer it.

In the next week or two we can then discuss specifics, who brings what etc etc.

I'm hoping for a frosty, sunny day. It's like that here today and the fields and scenery look spectacular!

Evening all!

Well it's 12 days to go and we haven't spoken much about this meet for a while now. I've been contacted by some of you about whether it's still on, so can we have a show of hands again, who's in?

Just a reminder, the venue will cost us £80 for the day so within a few days we'll know how many of us are coming and that will give an idea of what it will divvy up to be per head. I'll make sure we have tea, coffee and biscuits on tap throughout the day (maybe a couple of beers added in for good measure) and my good lady is happy to cook up a heart warming lunch (we can discuss this closer to the time).

Please confirm below and say whether you can bring needed items such as a heater (we probably need 2 or so) and a projector. I'll pre-install video cables from the field into the club house with RCA's to connect to the active GS.

The long range weather forecast is only for ten days, but so far the 29th November is 10c, calm and partly cloudy with sun, so hoping it continues. I'll update on this thread at the 10 day mark and every odd day leading up to the meet.

The weather's gonna get pretty crap after this, so let's make this one to remember :)

Richard

PS: Does anyone have a 5.8 RHCP patch antenna? I'm keen to try for 4km.
Anyone keen to stay late and try some night time FPV? Sunset is 16:29pm

Still in, although with the obvious caveat that if it's due to be tipping it down with rain, then there's not much point.  Other than that, I'd still come even with nothing to fly just for the fun of going passenger :)

Rich, last night I stuck a camera on my AXN... now I'm not sure if it'll stay there in flight, but it's in theory ready to FPV !

Excellent Dave, looking very forward to seeing you all there. I'll be there from early probably doing a night (???) flight to warm up etc, so come as early as you dare. I have just sort of finished the Twinstar - all systems working and 360 degree servo etc etc. All there is left to do is get the wing on and servo's connected and set FY21AP and failsafe then she should be good to go. It's had a few flights already and is a pretty cool plane - even had a crash :)

just remembered I have one of those electric oil filled radiators in the attic so can bring that too, along with small fan heater.  It pumps out quite a bit of heat once warmed up and dial on full blast.

Good question! So far if everyone comes it will be £8 a piece for the venue. Are you all keen on my food idea? If so I reckon we could work on say £15 per head (if ten flyers come) and that will cover the tea / coffee, croissants, biscuits and lunch.

Let me know your ideas on this.

Jim we could have made awesome 'warm, comfort food' for the day. At an additional £7 a piece, we coud have done well. Right, we'll divvy up the £80 for the venue (please bring some cash) - you'll need it, McDonald's down the road!

What does the rest say?

Let's put it to a vote Jim. The options for food are
1. Pub down the road - probably £16 for a meal
2. Burger King at the services - 3 miles
3. I and my good lady put something on - maybe a curry or lamb casserole with dumplings etc etc. We then all chip in to cover costs.

I prefer option 3 mainly co's I'm not really encouraged to eat fast food and we'll have more time for flying and feasting since we don't have to break for lunch.

It's really up to you all. Please give your suggestions on 1, 2 or 3.

The chance of rain has gone up to 20% and it's gonna be cold. I suggest hot water bottles too (for the lap) - there's a huge kettle with an unending supply of boiling water :)

Spose it might be an idea for everyone to bring a multisocket extension., unless FBS has a cunning plan already. Damn hope the supply can cope lol.
Title: Re: Winter FPV Meet - Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Post by: Flyboysee on November 24, 2012, 10:31:29 PM
Right, thanks for the feedback guys!

I'll be making a Curry since CK asked so nicely - lamb though, not kitten if that's okay :) The food will be pre-cooked the night before (always a good idea for a curry) and I'll make a quantity based on the confirmations the night before. So I reckon get yourself a breakfast on the way in - there will be Tea / Coffee and biscuits / croissants etc, then lunch at say 13:00 (ish). Does that sound like a plan?

As to the venue I'll put tables in the two shower rooms as hangars for gear etc. and do our charging there as well. I'll bring a power extension, as well as some multi plugs.

The lounge area is big enough for 10+ to sit and eat, watch big screen etc.

As I said I'll run AV cables in from the field to connect to the projector.

CK, would you like to give live feeding a shot? I have your Easy Cap, but unfortunately I couldn't get it to work on Win 7 / 64. Sometimes there is a 3g signal available, so who knows...? It might turn out to be too much of a schlepp!

As to frequencies, although we compared notes before the last meet there were still one or two clashes (uneventful though). I reckon we just get on with it, but please make sure all planes are landed before switching on systems. People who want to do tandem flights just switch on and see what happens, then adjust. I reckon it will be pretty cold so those not flying at any given time would most likely be watching the action on the screen.

I hope the weather gods are with us!

Richard

Live feed is going to be a no go from me... I spent a few hours today just trying to feed my vrx signal into Skype, but I just couldn't get anything to play ball.  Poor old Atarix was trying to FPV my car around my lounge from Italy with a view of my crappy DVR held up to my web cam.

I had exactly the same sort of Win7-64 issues on my work laptop trying to get my Dazzle running - what a nightmare.  I'll grab my EzCap back if that's ok - I'll see if I can get that Skype'd up for the future at least.

Plan sounds good - looking forward to it already :)

Davey I think you'd do better to lose your hoard by posting on the Classified's, then offering delivery to the meet if ppl are interested in anything. You also have a wider audience by a large factor. Coming to the meet (if it happens) will be between 10 - 12. The forum has 1686 active members minus 1 (that's you!)

Given up on my Parkzone Stryker - will be selling it off soon.  FPV didn't work too well in it. yup need something a bit slower hehe.   Might still bring it just to scare myself again / play lawn darts with it.  For me FPV Quad = much more relaxing.

Great Stuff Neil! I( can't remember if the wall is mottled or not.) If so, that will be iffy for projection. If you have the space please bring it. The other heater will be warmly welcomed.!

Good Morning All!

It's 06:15am on the day. The wind is zero and there is a mist over the village and surrounds which looks like it will lift with the morning sun by 9am. Should make for great footage and I'll be taking off after first light to try and get it.

That said, please drive carefully and take it easy, there's no rush!

Last night I put together an intro for video's made at the meet - might be nice to fly under the same banner on our YT channels. Take it or leave it - Here it is.

Mad Dogs Meet YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMmZHBqIRzo#ws)

You can download it with YT Downloader or PM me and I'll mail it to you - it's a small file.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all - here's to a fantastic day's flying with few, if any mishaps :)

Hi Everyone!

It was great to see you all today and to meet new faces. Most of you had driven a long way to and fro. Many thanks for making it a great meet up! The day was full of action, with lots of high's and low's, as well as several maidens and firsts! All in all I think it was a fantastic success!

I'd like to propose that we make this a bi-annual event, one in summer and one in winter. How do you all feel about that?

I'm looking forward to all the videos that will come out of this meet.

Thanks again for coming!

Richard

I'm definately up for a bi-annual event. Bring on the BBQ for the summer is all I can say.

Hi yes I was enjoying myself till the mid air :o
Got some nice video of Dave's plank in the tree and Aitch's hex flying up close to my quad.  Signing off for the rest of the weekend now as better spend some time with the family.  Will cobble together a vid next week.

Putting my wreckage into a box and shelving it for a while.  Will order in a boom or complete frame, cut a gimbal plate out of G10 + new set o props and fix it up over the Xmas period I reckon.

Thanks Rich for hosting and enjoy hoovering up.

Cheers

I've discoverd I killed a servo too, and lots my lipo Guard.. doh :)

Final damage report:

Striped Futaba S3152 (No idea how that happened?).
Broken Control Clevis.
Snapped Motor mount.
Lost Lipo Guard.
Broken folding prop.

But she'll live to fly again :)

no worries, Dave.

In hindsight, I suppose with the busy airspace, I should of stayed on the ground for a bit.  But what are the chances of a comming together like that?  Yes lottery ticket time!  Sorry your flying had to end so quickly though.  Not too much damage on both sides going by the damage reports.

till the next time  :)

What an action packed meet, some outcomes worse than others, but an awesome day.

I can barely make a fist with my hands now after shaking that tree trying to get Dave's Twinstar out of it.  Maybe Gav will feel it tomorrow as he was half way up the tree leaning out at full stretch with a pole... that's got to pull a few muscles.

Fantastic to see all of you again, and meet some new people.  Special thanks to Rich for the organisation, as well as talking me through my first plane FPV flight... I'm almost a convert :D

Whew!  I can still type with the one finger I saved from frostbite!

Great days flying, once I found the venue :) Fascinating to see other peoples setups. Got to get my antenna tracker done!

Aitch. Hope you have sood fun with my old EasyStar. She was my first FPV vessel. Your Hexacopter was very impressive in the air as were all the multicopters. First time I have seen so many multicopters. I guess one day I will have to try making one, but my list of things to make gets longer and perhaps now is the season for some quality shed time.

Sod it though. I forgot my video recorder battery and forgot to turn on my keychain before flying so didnt get any footage. :(

Thanks FlyBoySee for organising everything and looking forward to the next one!

regards
Andy

Really enjoyed the day, meeting so many people and seeing different solutions to the same problems. Thanks for organising the event, location, tea, coffee etc.

The popularity of 5.8GHz video did cause some issues with some people waiting to fly. I guess for the future we could arrange beforehand to spread ourselves across the available frequencies. I did swap frequencies on my Skywalker during the day but it was a right pain doing this in the cold and then having to find the right channel on my ground station. We could re-invent the frequency board!

Not wanting to make things too rigid, but perhaps an informal queuing system would also be useful.  Was a bit of a free for all, and I know I (accidentally) jumped in front of you on one occasion - although as it was, we didn't clash on video.

Probably easier to organise when we aren't all rushing to get in the air before our fingers fall off :D

Hi Mick

It was great to meet you and seeing your interesting set ups!

This is the 2nd meet up and we had more people on the day than previously. You are right, at the next meet we could be a LOT more organised and even prior to the day we could choose channels and create more combinations on 5.8. By then I hope to be on 2.4 or better :)

Gav is that my AXN in your video, or Krikeys do you know ?  You had some fantastic angles using that gimbal of yours.

I have to say despite the mid air cheers Davey :-*, I really enjoyed myself and was fun editing up the video.

Aitch your hex was cool and I liked your name on your fpv transmission lol.  Also enjoyed your video - interesting to see from your point of view.

Quad will be fine.  Really pleased I used plastic screws and hex pillars on the gimbal, as they saved the plates from getting snapped.

Not sure whos plane was whos on the video Wayne appart from the one stuck in the tree lol.  edit  oh yeah and the one that took out my quad   ;D
Title: Re: Winter FPV Meet - Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Post by: DaveyLC on December 03, 2012, 11:18:25 AM
Glad you can sort it relatively easy :) I wasnt too concerned about the wing due to it being laminated in invincibility lol :D

I wonder if I was actually flying FPV whether the outcome would have been different? As you said to me at the field in the Video you see my pull-up into the quad, but as we all know when flying LOS you see an obstical your first reaction is pull up as most obsticals are connected to the ground :D and that would have been right about the time that everyone shouted at me "Watch out for the quad" followed by the most horible hedge strimmer-esque noise I've herd for a while!

Was there audio on the original FPV footage? :)

What an idiot I am. I posted my vid in the FPV section. Perhaps you should all move your vids there, or post in both (is that okay Ian) because people who aren't connected to this thread won't see them. And frankly, they are too good to go to waste.

Anyway I have started replacing the lost gear. I bought an Easystar II and Hacker motor today and also ordered a new 100mw Fatshark vtx from Simon.
Thinking about the Sony super HAD 600tvl WDR camera from securitycamera2000. Unless you guys know better.

Hey Mark

I've put word out at the pub and the chairman knows the farmer who's fields your plane is likely to have gone down in, so let's hope it comes back.

Well done on an EZII - I can vouch for them - is the hacker motor 2200kv?

Also that 100mw vtx. Is that for the plane? I reckon you should be going for 600mw 5.8, or at the very least what I have on the Twin, a 200mw Foxtech.

Glad to hear youre back on the horse Mark. I know that Currykitten and Atarix777 were working with some lower powered VTx but using directional antenna instead. I believe Atarix was using a Helical and an omni of some sort.

Loving the videos of the day. I think that if CK and Atarix can work out the mechanisms to do FPV via the internet, this could gieva whole new meaning to a FPV meet.

Atarix wanting to be whiter than white, got a 25mw Nano Stinger VTX on his quad (which wasn't one I'd ever heard of before, but is Immersion/FatShark compatible).  He was getting great range, but it on diversity with a helical and SPW on the rx which is also placed up high and away from him.  So it's doable, but takes more effort.  For what it's worth, I always told him to get more power.  He had actually just bought a 600mw VTX, but that's destined for the car.  Long range flying *will* come at some point, we just need someone with enough stupidity vision to take part.

CK: I'll be following yours and Atarix tests as if you can get good range with less power, that surely has very positive connotations. Do you need to distance both antenna on the VRx?

Title: Mad Dogs Entry : Video of the Month
Post by: Flyboysee on December 05, 2012, 05:48:47 PM
Hi Guys!

Just thinking about this 'Video of the Month' competition. The rules say that the video must have been made on or after the 1st December. That means footage from the meet can be used. I'm thinking about how nice it would be to do a compilation video from 'Mad Dogs' and enter it. I'd be happy to do the editing.

If you're keen and would like to be in it please PM me your email address and I will invite you to a Dropbox folder. You then edit out your best clips (short one's of great action, awesome footage etc) with a lead in to the action of about 3 seconds, as well as a lead out time of same (to make editing my side quick and easy). Render them in 1080p / 720p for Go Pro, 720p for #16 and best you can for flight cam and upload your named clips.

You could still enter full videos to the competition in your own name.

This entry will be made as a collective (aka not Flyboysee) but rather Mad Dogs Meet. I will make sure every pilot is credited etc etc.

What do you guys think?

I dont have much footage of the day due to a dodgy formatted SD card :( Looking forward to a compilation though.

Hi Guys!

I thought I'd also just mention how your money was spent.

Very simple accounting.

Outgoings:
Tea, Coffee, Milk, Bikkies, Beer (though no one drank any beer, I'm slowly working through them!) £32
Paid to Venue £90

Total £122

Money in:
Your contributions £100 (Thanks to Dave_B for playing George Osbourne)

Since most of you came from far, spent on gas and had to wake up very early, I consider the deficit of £22 a bargain :)

Thanks again for an awesome day!

Richard

Great idea, I will let you have any video that might be worth including.  By the way I like you video edits, looking forward to the compilation.

well my quadcopter is airworthy again  -  1 prop and 1 replacement arm  :)  Oh and re sticking the Naza down again with fresh double sided foam.

Had a test fly around the garden and it was fine.

Just need to check the GPS receiver in an open space.  Was not getting green flashing lights (sat lock) in the garden so will try tomorrow in an open space.  Too many trees around my back garden.   Fingers crossed anyway.

Hey Skyrob

Welcome aboard, we'll definitely be doing another Oxon / Hants meet soon enough. Where are you based? Anywhere near Oxford I'd be happy to help out.

I've had some crashes, so I'm rebuilding my gear into new planes. Got a Penguin and Bixler2 waiting on transplants :)
