Title: Easter Lake District Meet! DATES SET
Post by: Flyn on January 07, 2013, 01:54:32 AM
Hi all,

due to positive reactions to my recent visit to the Lakes I'd like to arrange a Easter Break meet up there.

I have about 5-7 great locations to fly at, all within 30minutes of each other, we have some great peaks & valleys to fly with only a few sheep & cows to worry about, as well as a cliff top roman fort & more.

There're plenty of hotels, guest houses etc to stay in - or if you're brave why not camp?!?!

Just trying to gauge some numbers at the moment, so please post if you'd like to come...

Here's a vid & some pics to tempt you!

I might well come up (all the way from basingstoke) with the Other half for the weekend. Be good to meet some people off here, just got to find a hotel that allows dogs. Will let you know when a firm date is set :)

If any one else is staying the night who likes curry and a beer ???

Sounds good to me. Thought about stopping off at the Lake District on the way back down from Scotland, but given we'd had such a good week in Scotland was pretty much spoilt and didn't feel the need.

Love that shot of your ZII with the great backdrop.  Just makes you want to get out and fly!

Confirm the date and we'll get it in the diary.

Should be up for this myself.  Although I'm only an hour away so I'll just turn up if the weather is ok.

The only way I could make it is book dates now...

I work every other weekend and have 2 days holiday left so for me to make it I'd need to plan it now...

What dates are you thinking of ?

Right my work Rota works out that I'm Easter weekend sat/sun
So if its the Easter weekend that would be very good :)

And just an idea but depending who's going we split into say 2 groups and the reason is 20 people together even 1 flight each will take all day!

So if there's enough I recomend split into 2 groups and fly morning meet up at a pub lunch time discuss then afternoon we fly at diffrent locations.

Just an idea though, plus we'd need to be a fair distance from each other to avoid video issues..

I was thinking the same thing looking at the sign up sheet!

There're a few spots on x2 roads a few miles apart that should be fine enough.

There's also a big wide open valley with lots of spots to set up far enough apart but close enough for formation flying!

Plus there's a pub half way back to civilisation that does great sausage & chutney sandwiches.

yeah, we need to think about what frequencies we fly on too!

on 5.8GHz, we should be able to get three flying at once, one at top of band, one in middle and one at bottom.

Going to be fun. I need to check out some digs....none of this camping melarky, I need by beauty sleep! LOL

I am up for this, if the weather forecast is reasonable. Probably B&B at Easter, camping is fine for the summer.

Pub quiz question: how many lakes are there in the Lake District?

Lots, but only one that actually has "Lake" in it's name, Bassenthwaite Lake.

Yep should be able to get at least 3 up given good enough ground separation. Should have a range on 5.8.

Yeah maybe camping will be a bit optimistic.

Also if anyone would like some left hand polarised skew antennas I'll be happy to make some to aid the interference free flying.

Just do maximum 15min flights i have flown in a club with 30 people turnouts (sounds a bit wrong) and it has been ok just dont take the pi55 with half hour flights.
Whos on BBQ duty ? ;-)

I'm sure we can sort somit out, like a 2.4 vid hour.

I think realistically we have 2 options.

1. Fly 2 locations, one at the hill I flew the ZII & then another in a few valleys over then meet in the middle for lunch & catchup & then swap over for the afternoon.

Or

2. We stick to one large group where we have lots of spotters & time to fettle planes & chat & fire up the BBQ & then move on after lunch. This would mean a max of 3-4 flying at once & a good control on powering up & freqs.

Also realistically they may well be a few people who would like to come but for what ever reason won't be able to make it so it may not be as crowded as thought - I hope everyone who wants to come can, don't get me wrong it's an open to all meet!

Plus if we can either put in a few quid each for BBQ or just stick to bringing own food.

FYI there's likely to no or very little phone signal out there so if we fly x2 groups a pre arranged switch time maybe needed & could be quite hard to organise.

Even if you limited everyone to one 15 min flight that's still going to take an age, and as for 3 flying at once I suspect many of use just stick to basic freq so two flying at once would be tricky enough...

I'd say 2 groups
Group 1. Would be those on UHF/35mhz and 2.4 video so they can not suffer the effects of the 2.4ghz radios

Group2 would be those on 2.4 radio and 5.8 video

Remember even trying to do a radio preflight a 2.4 radio could cause issue for a 2.4 video flyer...  Going to need very good channel control.

When we had the FPV bounce meet, we just all set up in a long line. UHF and 2.4 at one end and 2.4 and 5.8 at the other end.

When turning something on, you shout what you are about to turn on. "turning on 2.4 radio" "turning on 5.8 video" ect. If you her a scream back " ive lost video"  "getting interferance" you turn back off.

Being in a long line it worked pretty well, with only a few people that clashed. We had quite a few in the air at once.

I'll not be flying then if someone can just switch on in a long line and bleed all over my video or I could bleed all over them. (My transmitter will stay in its box until my allotted time, not just get it out and see what happens)

I Got Shoot down in the days of 35mhz and that was within a minute of making sure the guy on the same channel new I was going up. That day I learn't something important not to let it happen again.

I'm going with two failsafes....

1) Hoping by this time my Bixler 2 and Skywalker, or whatever I bring will have RTH enabled, so if I lose video, or TX then the RTH can kick in....hopefully...

2) I'm going to buy a small hamster and put it in my planes, if RTH does work, he can just take the controls and bring her down nicely!

Phun Times,

I wasnt saying thats what we have to do here, was just saying that multiple people can be in the air and similar freqs can be close to each other with no problem.

Title: Re: Easter Lake District Meet!

The lesson learned from the Mad Dogs meet was that with most people on 5.8GHz some sort of frequency control or slot allocation is needed. It was very frustrating for some people who spent a long time waiting to fly.

At the minimum we need to identify those on 2.4GHz video and ensure at least 1 mile separation from those on 2.4GHz radio or a time slot system.

For those on 5.8GHz then as keukpa said then we need to spread the people across the frequencies available which is much easier to do on the bench than at the field - I tried to do this at Mad Dog as everybody was on the same default frequency, it was crazy.

Seems like its going to be hard work with a large bunch of people. Even if you have two groups a mile appart that could still have impact if planes travel in wrong directions, might be worth having a few smaller meetings on a few different days as if im driving 5 hours im kind of hoping for more than half hour in the air. Lets all fly LOS that way no problems :-)

Firstly, yes - I will get this in my calendar!

Mick is right, everyone being on 5.8 is dangerous to say the least... I for one will be moving to a less popular frequency and with Dragon Link, there should be no issues.

The last Mad Dogs meet had I think ten flyers and it was a long wait between flights, so a decent spread would be good, but as we found out, planning ahead was almost impossible. The previous meet had around 8 flyers and there was very little in the way of hassles. When we met at Hampshire recently there were four of us and no issues at all, so it's a numbers game.

Either way, that's a beautiful location and I will be there!

Richard

I think if we can get 3-4 people up at once on 5.8 it would be good.

We'll prob need to launch LOS due to proximity vrx swamping then once airborn goggle up as the the distance between everyone's vtx's & VRX's etc will be ok.

Guess we'll have to nominate a pit boss to control stuff & have a 10-15min window per group of 3-4 pilots, all up then all down then move out for next lot. So no hogging the flight line.

Then have 30mins-1hr for 2.4 vid etc??

But if 20 pilots turn up we may need to do the 2 groups thing as everyone will only get 1 flight in the day!!!
Title: Re: Easter Lake District Meet!
Post by: FPVSteve on January 10, 2013, 12:56:53 AM
If they launched LoS, what happens if one person lands earlier than the others..... their video at distance would be wiped out by the guy who just landed, eek.
Title: Re: Easter Lake District Meet!
Post by: Flyn on January 10, 2013, 01:02:09 AM
That's why we need a good separation of the ground stations/VRX to minimise this, maybe designate a remote landing area with a non flying pilot to attend to landed models??

If possible...

To be honest even if it takes hours to fly that's fine by me - I travelled to Bardney and didnt get to fly due to travelling around Lincolnshire with my head out of a van looking for an X8  but it was still great to meet up and faff around with other folks' stuff and have a crack on - it's not like you sit shivvering bored out of your skull when you're not flying is it?

Game on I say, the more the merrier - just have to accept that it'll be busy but the trade off is, loads of FPVers in one location (just watch out for CAA/BMFA guided missiles TeamFTP video style - I suggest we stand 10 metres apart to protect against any air strikes).

Besides - when you're not flying, just tune in with your goggles and enjoy the view :)

Positive attitude! :D

I think we can do this with a bit of organisation. Most of us use ImersionRC 5.8GHz vtx and they have the following frequencies and therefore using only alternate channels for better separation we can get 4 into the air at the same time for say a 30min slot.

5740MHz - A
5760MHz
5780MHz - B
5800MHz
5820MHz - C
5840MHz
5860MHz - D

Then do the same with those on Foxtech frequencies, if anybody is using them, are they?

Do we have any 2.4GHz video flyers attending?

Do we need to take a poll of what each of us use? I use Immersion vtx and am happy to switch to any frequency in advance.

God, I wish I had stuck to 1.3GHz.

Yeah, a little forethought and PMA and we'll be reet.

Yeah I use ImmersionRC 5.8, and it's only gonna take 30 seconds to switch frequencies, so am happy to move about!

I'm also going to bring a 2.4GHz and DrangonLink system, so could fly that too. I think this will be fun no matter what to be honest. And lots of us have quads, so we can all do some LOS quad flying whilst waiting for our slot to FPV.

I fly EZUHF and 2.4ghz, but will bring my 5.8gz aswell. I fly on 2.414 and 5.865 (antennas tuned to them freqs)

When we had bounce, someone made an online spread sheet that we all added our RC and video freqs too.

Cool, we just need to nail down a day or preferably 2 for the meet.

I think if we can keep a few days/weekends available then pick the best weather weekend.

Dont leave it too late to choose the dates as some of us inc me need to book hotels. What about the easter bank hols weekend ? Just a thought

I'd avoid that weekend.  It will be hellishly busy up there and all the accommodation will be more expensive.

Ok, I've had a chat with some of the guys & we've got some dates for the meet.

The first dates put forward are the 6-7th of April with backup dates of the
13-14th incase of bad weather on the primary days.

If anyone is in need or would like I'll be able to make them some right-hand polarised skew antennas or for those who want left-hand polarised for interference free close quarters group flying I can do those too.

I'll be doing some LHP for myself!

How much for the antennas Flyn? I wouldn't mind some for when I meet up with keukpa and Marklincs as we had some issues last time and some chase footage would be excellent (had to do it LoS last time).

Erm is it a bit late for me to put myself down as a maybe?? I will be bringing (dragging) the other half along too, some fresh air will do her good ;-) Ive only got my quad so will be up in the air and back on the deck in 10 mins, I will be running 5.8 GHz vid as well though (ImmersionRC). I would be needing a pretty solid date to book a hotel and it will probably be a long weekend for us.

No, my birthday is on the 16th so just after ;) What is the location by the way? Where is everyone looking at staying? Maybe it would be a good idea if we tried to stay in the same hotel or the same town/village? It would be more sociable at least :)
Title: Re: Easter Lake District Meet! DATES SET
Post by: Flyn on January 24, 2013, 06:48:16 PM
I got locations down & will be shared soon enough.

We haven't gotten as far as hotels etc, some of us are thinking of being hardcore & camping out!

However it would be great to all stay in or near the same place - have been thinking about that, as going for a pint & a slap up meal with everyone after a days flying Bardney was ace.

Well gents, tbh I think we should leave this for a summer meet going by the latest batch of bad weather.

Plus I just got a job in today for a trip to Spain over the first suggested weekend & have a tooth extraction a day before the second, so it looks like I won't be making either weekend for various reasons.

I think we should DEFINITELY keep this in mind for when the weather improves & I'm not out of the country or getting my head drilled.
