Title: recommend me a soldering iron/station
Post by: badger on August 15, 2019, 11:16:43 AM
my cheapo B&Q soldering iron isn't really up to the job - other than for melting xt60's - & I'm after something a bit better before I start trying to solder flight controllers.

soldering stations seem to be eye-wateringly expensive - it is really worth paying the extra for what seems to be a just glorified thermostat?  :o

many thanks

If you can get a second hand Weller, that would be good.
Metcals are superb.  We have one at work and it's in a league above a typical maplin temp controlled iron.  Whether they're worth the wonga is another matter, but you could be looking at 600/700 quid for one.

thanks gents.  the Aoyue 936 looks a bit more like what I'm after.

I did look for second-hand Wellers, but they hold their value really well.  :(

for 600 I would expect a robotic iron that did the soldering for me  ;)

I've got a Silverline 265829 48 W Soldering Station (44 on Amazon). It copes with everything up to an xt60 and you can get a fine tip if you need one. If you need to solder an xt90 you'll want something bigger.
