Earlier that year the CAA sought consultation on the proposal to extend the Legacy and Transitional category UAS provisions in the Open category for Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

Following the UK Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) consultation on whether to extend the legacy and transitional provisions for drones operating in the open category, and after a formal decision from the Department for Transport (DfT), it has been decided that the transition and legacy provisions will now be extended to 1 January 2026. This time will allow for the CAA and DfT to conduct a review of regulations for unmanned aircraft, including the open category to ensure it is properly regulated in a way that is fit for purpose for the UK prior to 2026.

The DfT will also be changing UK regulations so that European Union (EU) class marks on drones will not be recognised in the UK after 1 January 2023. Drones with EU class marks will still be able to be flown in the UK after that date in the Open and Specific categories but may not make use of the class mark provisions in the A1, A2 and A3 subcategory.

The DfT will formally publish these changes to UK Regulation (EU) 2019/947 and UK Regulation (EU) 2019/945 in December ahead of them coming into effect before January 2023.

Let's see what December brings. Hopefully, for the typical law abiding, insured, competent and responsible model flyer, the changes will be few.

For club flyers, continue to fly as you have been doing for years. As previously stated the only significant difference for most is the requirement to register with the CAA and display this on your model. As you will probably remember this was introduced as little more than a knee jerk reaction to the wrongly perceived dangers in one of the safest sports you can enjoy. Sadly the powers that be still do not recognise that the various safety awards from the model flying associations actually involve demonstrating that you can fly safely as opposed to an online multiple choice questionnaire which my cat could pass after only a few attempts.

It works both ways - I employ an accountant in ROI who take care of all of the VAT payments for software sales into the EU (VATMOSS) ... even if it's as low as 20p in say Finland it still needs paid every 3 months. If they didn't take care of it I'd have to register with every individual country and pay taxes separately with all different VAT rates. Totally worth them taking care of it for me, it would be a nightmare otherwise.

I'm not sure with hobby equipment but nearly everything now from abroad gets sent over with no tax declared and gets stopped, delayed and billed to me every time now, especially German companies I've noticed too.

I wonder if any of this stuff still applies nowadays (7 years later)?

Also, UK government insists that foreign companies now register for and pay VAT. I suspect Hobby King Hong Kong simply ignore that directive, but I noticed AliExpress has added UK VAT to my orders.

Hey Guys! Still waiting on the right weather for the speed planes, it has been either too windy EVERY day, or too hot. We have not had a stable weather pattern suitable for these speeders for months and months.. well since last year! I have charged and discharged the packs so many times in prep, they are probably knackered now! Hopefully soon.
