So, really, what's the best option for a non techy, like it straightforward, straight up kinda person like me? In otherwords, a muppet.

I value reliability and ease of use and have been recommended a spektrum dx7s. I also hear good things about the turnigy ones from HK but I'm not sure I trust my flying money pit to something which is about $65...... don't know why.

Any recommendations from y'all please??

Yes I am a Taranis nut and absolutely love it, but its not as easy as some of the branded radios to use, yes once you have the basics it is, but most who find this have been dabbling for ages so don`t even realize that their experience has made it seem so easy.

For someone getting into it, want it as stress free s possible I still stand by Futaba as a great beginner / intermediate radio. Start with no smaller than a Futaba 7.

Ditch the Spektrum IMO, been there, done that, over priced under engineered kit that loves a good brown out :)

Totally agree with Coyote including the minimum of needing the 7 channel radio, not just for the extra channel but the extra features, switches and programming available over the 6. Given that many people spend money on unnecessary bling you should be able to pick up a used 7c on fleabay.

If you can afford something better then the 8FG or the Hitec Aurora 9, both are another step up in features but at a price.

I got the Futaba t8j with the r2008sb rx and it's been solid for over 2 years now with no issues at all.
I max mine out at 1.8km then I start getting glitches but I can still turn round and head home.
I bet I can do more if I separate my rx which is sitting right next to the esc and a servo but it's only a tiny HK Walrus frame.

Futaba all day. I got a FF9 second hand, love it, real rock solid and reliable. Won't do super advanced fancy programming but it's enough for me :)

Futaba FF9 -look for decent one on fleabay. Aim for less than £100.

As others on here will testify, I am a Futaba nut and would not touch anything else even if it was free.
Nice to see others supporting the great Futaba.
A 9C  is very versatile and if you get one for 100-150 it's a bargain. It can do mixes that some people haven't even thought of and also modules can be changed for Frsky, UHF or even JR if you're that desperate.
I have 2 x 7C, 8FG and the 9C and thinking of going for top of the range when I retire or win the lottery.

My flying buddy swears by Spektrum but I do read bad things from time to time. That said, I'm sure if I dug further in people would say they had problems with futaba, frsky, turnigy et al. The joys of the internet!!

You hardly never find a fault with Futaba, if you do i would think alot of it is user error! Spektrum are fine for park flying models but they just drop the link! Futaba Fassat is one of the strongest i belive!

Years ago before 2.4ghz was all the rage we used to have 4 meter antenna wires to get longer range!

Again, its just what your budget can afford! Taranis are ok, but very unpolished but that reflects in the price!

You can buy a new taranis for the same price as a second hand futaba, but its not a futaba  :D
