HobbyFing FPV250 quad bare build (without FPV gear)

My 9 year old son has started to get interested in modelling now, and especially quads, so initially I was thinking of getting him a Blade 200QX however what with getting bored waiting for them to be released, the relatively high price at £160 and then potential problems repairing a one-piece model, I decided to build him a HobbyKing FPV250 for LOS operation with the future option of FPV gear if he really gets into the hobby. Having already built a couple of mini quads (the most recent being a 'Blackout' clone), I decided to go with my tried and tested electronics configuration of an old kk2.0 board I picked up off ebay and power train from myrcmart. With the bad weather this weekend I set about putting a wet Bank Holiday Monday to good use so here we go... here is a full list of components and a couple of photos:

• HobbyKing FPV250 Frame
• Fastners for FC - nylon
• kk2.0 with v 1.6++ voltage monitor and buzzer
• 4 x RCX 1804 (2400KV ) Micro Outrunner Brushless Motor (2xCW * 2xCCW
• 4 x RCX 10A ESC Brushless Motor Speed Controller (G Series / Programed for Multicopter - SimonK Firmware)
• Power Distribution via esc cable soldering, no extra board
• 4 x GemFan 5x3" EPP5030 Propellers (bright colours to aid LOS visibility)
• Spektrum AR6210 rx
• HobbyKing UltraBright Red LED bar (to aid LOS visibility)
• GensAce 3s 1300mah Li-Po

Total weight ready to fly is 393g (maybe a couple more when I add the kk2.0 protection cage on once it is dialled in). I've not flown it yet due to the weather but I'm expecting pleasant manners based on previous experience of these components with potential madness should it be required later  ;D.

Special thanks got to Coyote for the tip in another thread on using tie-wraps for securing the RCX motors as the screw spacing is awkward amd doesn't suit this frame but with tie-wraps's it's perfect and probably more crash-resistant too.

I am waiting for my 250 to come...  I looked at the 200QX today and it looked very fragile, the shell is almost see-through. For £150 I don't think I will get one...

Not too bad for your daughter Jake, these pesky kids learn too quickly ;D

I hope they have good jobs as it gets expensive!

Thats a great tip, slotting the arms for the tiny bolt spacing was a PITA, that looks much easier !

Mad that, my daughter was more interested in my FPVing than either of my sons, she's 16 now though,
she'd look at me stupid if I mentioned going up the common for a flight now
