I have decided to give the APM another chance on the quad. I gave itup about 6 months ago as it seemed that every time I updated the firmware it became more unpredictable and unreliable. So my question is what is the most stable version for a quad? I have the APM with off board compass and GPS?

Can't say what quad firmware you need but I can confirm that the latest plank firmware and most previous has its problems. Me and Gin were playing around with all the updates and the only one working properly is on my SH running version 3.11.

Have a look on firmware.diydrones.com

There's hundreds of versions but well worth spending the time and going through them.

I have tried loads over time. I have heard that the later versions are overloading the processor causing re boots and brown outs. I just want a stable version so I can sell on my quad.

I updated mine on the weekend and I couldn't get the motor on my SW to arm plus the Minim OSD started playing up. Serves me right for tinkering the night before a meet.

This is the firmware version I am currently using on my SH and I can confirm after many flights that it works perfectly. I will NOT be updating the apm to anything else.

Hope that helps a few plank flyers out there.

APM 2.6 is still supported in the latest builds. What they have done is remove some features around 'mount' to free up space and of course it lacks many new features. There was a 'bug' in a recent release that meant it would not boot up fully if no gps was connected. They also added some startup checklist features that by default required a number of actions before allowing you to arm the motor.

All of these caught me out when I hastily upgraded without reading the release notes.

I think ArduPlane is still being supported. t's just ArduCopter that isnt. Presumably because copters put a greater strain on the processor

Correct, when I connected to MP It told me that the board is no longer supported.  However I did manage to install 3.1 which seems to work OK, well enough for me to sell the quad anyway.
