Also if you're busting range you're going for efficiency (one thing VTOL is not renowned for).

BUT ... what if this is something for the likes of Amazon ... VTOL for dispatch + delivery + return to home ... flying much more efficiently home...

Best of both worlds... now to just work on the payload capacity...

Landing is a bit different though, I guess it depends on whether you are expecting to land in one piece or just crash it on the spot. Both are viable in terms of getting out of the air but I'd recommend landing it with plenty of room :)
