RoboBiggles' DeHavilland Mosquito scale FPV cockpit build

Hi guys,

Here's progress on a build I started before Xmas. Started with a Parkzone DeHavilland Mosquito. Dug out a load of foam and lined the hole with plasticard. I've only dropped it down enough to allow a panning camera into the cockpit, as I found if I went deeper I was running into embedded components in the foam that I didn't want to disturb. Then I sourced some great images of the Mossie flying in NZ for reference and began making instruments and panels, and a navigator and seating. In case any one else fancies a go, I will upload the images of all the panels - will save folks quite some time as they are all heavily photoshopped. Somewhere I have a template I did for the plasticard side pieces. If I can find where I filed it I'll upload that here too.

The navigator is the original pilot, repainted with some bits added (lengths of servo wire for the mic and headphone cables, and a few snips of folded photopaper for the mask and straps). The right cockpit panel is two servo connectors glued together and wrapped with photo image.

The elevator trim on the dashboard is another servo connector with 2 wires still in, a photo image, and a small cog from a Lego toy (my grandson hasn't noticed yet, but when he squeels I'll assume he's noticed). The RX & TX on the rear shelf are foam covered with plasticard and photo images. The instrument panels are plasticard with photos glued on. The switches are pins from more old servo connectors. Camera is a Pilot HD v2 - I love them.

Only a gunsight and a windscreen wiper still on the to do list. Might add the extra inner window frame struts but I'm torn - will take quite a bit of extra time and not sure it will do much to increase the atmospheric feel.

I'll add some progress pics I've taken along the way, in a wee while. This is it now, one from outside and one from the pilot view looking back over his right shoulder.

This is what FPV is to me, pretending to fly in a cockpit!

This was about half way through. It shows the off-centre camera position, to place the pilot's eyes in the middle of the flying instrument panel. At this point the plasticard sheets were all glued in place and painted, and the main instrument panels and controls had been assembled and glued in place. Crew and seating were finished but not installed, so dry testing could be done. At this point I did camera dry fitting to check what was in the panning view and what was not. Saved me a lot of effort as I was about to make a whole extra batch of cockpit parts which would not have been in view - so I didn't make em!!
