Good afternoon hubbites,
I have just set up the MFD and I am very impressed with it. I am considering getting a cheap monitor to assist with programming. I don't tend to fly more than 500m away is a ground station necessary and at what distance does it become so.

If you don't fly any further away than 500m you don't need anything more than goggles. You certainly do no not need an antenna tracker. Some never use trackers, you don't need them at all, they are more a luxury for those who like flying miles out but cover the horizon as opposed to straight out and back in a line.
Education and schoolin is good, but FPV is gooder :)

Thanks. That's £300 saved!

Depends if you keep to using 25mw.

25mw plus tracker works very well.

So does a tracker when flying low where you pass behind trees etc. .

500m... don't even bother thinking about a tracker. Even at 5000m you don't need one  :P

There are more sensible changes to make before you consider a tracker. i.e. your Vtx mw, video frequency etc

IMO if you have a very directional/high gain antenna and the more of the following boxes you tick the more useful a tracker is. They don't suit my needs at all and are just another thing to go wrong IMO but if you have

Low vid Tx wattage
High frequency
Long range
Flying low or behind trees
Fly behind yourself/like to position yourself in the middle of your flying spot

So if younhave a super high gain antenna on 5.8GHz because you fly far away low down behind a few trees they are pretty useful. But, if you want to do the abive- there are other options which don't need a tracker.

Agreed.   Really all comes down to how and where you fly.

I would not recommend anyone starting out uses one.  Just more complication.

That being said...

A good glacier does make your video signal rock solid.  That is always a bonus.

Recently I have been using one of the rssiprotrack.com  systems for my fpv car.

It's quite something to have your video still working when there are 6 or more real cars between you and the model!

Likewise with my mini quads.   I did a test with 7 wood fences between me and my quad.   Still had a good signal.

To be fair - I could have just pointer a high gain antenna in the general direction!   But where would the fun be in that!
