Every now and then I have a fiddle around with the Fyetech GCS system (new version 4.0 is out now) but I'm always having connection issues (I'm using 3DR 868mhz data modem) so I'm thinking about GSM control as that *should* prove far more reliable.

However after searching it doesn't become clear how these GSM system work.. DiyDrones lists a DroneCell product but I cant work out if its just a UART/Serial interface or if it is infact a full blown serial link over GSM?

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of stuff and care to share me their brain cells please? :D

I have a dronecell to play around with.

It is a full blown GPRS modem. That implies that you need to send commands to the modem to get it to do anything.
It is also not just a serial link - it is pretty much a mobile phone with a serial interface.
You need to tell it to make a call, send a text or connect to the internet.
You also need to make sure that you have a device that can recieve the data and transfer it to the groundstation.

That is a completely different ballgame to normal serial modems, that we use normally.

I was hoping that out there somewhere there is a device that can be used as a serial modem once initialised :(
