My take on a custom 'Blackout' style 250 quad for FPV

I really enjoy the design process so decided to have a go at using my CAD package to draft up a quad that I could customize and build at home from G10 very much based on the Blackout style as having tried other possibilities I kept coming back to this. One of the main drivers for customizing and not just buying off the shelf (apart from price!) is the fact that I wanted to use my kk2.0 and most of the mini quads seem to be designed for the smaller boards. I also like to have as much of the electronics 'inboard' as possible to both keep things tidy and protect them from damage and this is a challenge with the kk2.0. To this end, I have managed to get everything (apart from the optional mobius) inside the frame. In order to keep things light and tidy I went a bit extreme (read anal) and I re-soldered the kk2.0 connections to the bottom of the board, shortened all motor and esc cables (including the links to the kk2.0) and finally I also used the modded kk2.0 v1.6++ software so I could just run a Spektrum sat without needing a full RX. I'm really pleased with the results and it flies nicely. Here is a full run-down of the components and a couple of photos:

  • Frame Components 1.5mm G10
  • Fastners mainly nylon with metal for main plate/arm connectors
  • kk2.0 with v 1.6++ sat, modded connections, voltage monitor and buzzer
  • 4 x RCX 1804 (2400KV ) Micro Outrunner Brushless Motor (2xCW * 2xCCW
  • 4 x RCX 10A ESC Brushless Motor Speed Controller (G Series / Programed for Multicopter - SimonK Firmware)
  • Power Distribution via esc cable soldering, no extra board
  • 4 x 5x3" EPP5030 Propellers (GM Series / 2xCW * 2xCCW / Carbon Fiber)
  • Spektrum sat with Tarot adapter
  • IRC 600mw vtx
  • IRC Spironet Antenna
  • SONY Super HAD CCD 600TVL D-WDR DNR Board Camera (CMQ1993X-L28)
  • GensAce 3s 1300mah Li-Po







Total weight ready to fly (with the mobius) has come in spot on 500g so if I want even better performance then by dropping the mobius I'm getting down to around the 450g mark which I'm very pleased with for full size FPV gear!

Very nice, I didn`t realize you could solidly mount the KK board in all honesty, I thought they had to be padded because of vibrations...... You live n learn :)
Education and schoolin is good, but FPV is gooder :)

Just a suspicion but I have a feeling these smaller, higher rev'ing motors on the mini-quads don't cause as many vibration problems as the larger motors, certainly from a video perspective, I have many more problems with my 920kv DJI motors on other quads and that's after balancing them, I'm using the RCX's straight out the box and can't really feel any vibes at all and very little jello considering I'm not using any anti-vibration materials at all.
